About The Position

This role involves reviewing patient charts, scheduling tests, rooming patients, obtaining vital signs and medical history, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting providers with examinations and minor procedures. The Athletic Trainer will also be responsible for patient education on home exercise protocols and durable medical equipment, responding to patient inquiries, and maintaining accurate patient records in Epic. Additionally, the role includes stocking examination rooms, assisting with referrals and appointments, and performing other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Current state of Wisconsin ATC Licensure
  • BLS Certification
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Knowledge of physical medicine, physical therapy modalities, anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of EPIC or ability to be proficient within 4 weeks of hire
  • Competency with relevant medications and injection procedures
  • Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Must be able to lift, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, perform physical demands for position, including vision, hearing and repetitive motion.

Nice To Haves

  • Orthopedic or Sports Medicine Clinic Experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Review patient chart information prior to patient visit to ensure all testing results are available.
  • Schedule necessary x-rays and/or laboratory tests and process orders through Epic.
  • Room patients, obtain vital signs, current medications, past medical and surgical history, musculoskeletal injuries, and other patient data, and document information in Epic.
  • Prepare patients for specific examinations and assist Providers during patient examinations.
  • Remove bandages, splints, casts, or other wound coverings, and perform other patient-care procedures.
  • Perform routine patient procedures such as casting, splinting, and preparing for injections.
  • Provide and teach home exercise protocols for patients per the Provider’s request.
  • Assist Provider in performing minor procedures in the clinic, including preparing the patient and surgical tray.
  • Update patient information in Epic, including documentation of patient’s Primary Care Provider and/or referring Provider.
  • Prepare and send medication prescriptions per department protocol and Providers orders.
  • Handle cancellation of tests and/or appointments, and phone notes.
  • Dispense durable medical equipment to patients, complete required forms, and submit them.
  • Educate patients on the appropriate use of dispensed equipment.
  • Respond to routine patient inquiries and/or telephone calls, determine initial assessment of patient condition, and determine appropriate plan of care according to established guidelines.
  • Confer with Provider on complex and/or difficult situations and document information in Epic.
  • Ensure examination rooms are stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Assist with screening referrals and scheduling patient appointments.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
