About The Position

This role functions as a professional athletic trainer under the direct supervision of a Physician, providing a comprehensive treatment approach to assigned athletes/patients. The position involves planning and coordinating care, treatment, and rehabilitation, serving as a department-based role model, and contributing to department/center program development. The athletic trainer will also assist in providing concussion education and perform delegated clinical/clerical/administrative tasks. This role emphasizes integrating the Interprofessional Practice Model (IPM) and maintaining currency in the field through continuing education.

Responsibilities

  • Function as a professional athletic trainer under the direct supervision of a Physician.
  • Provide a comprehensive treatment approach to assigned athletes/patients.
  • Incorporate appropriate evaluation techniques, implement functionally based treatment programs, and perform appropriate discharge planning including patient education/training.
  • Make appropriate referrals to other resources and facilitate coordination and communication between patient, physician, and physical therapist.
  • Perform procedures, collect data, analyze data, and make decisions regarding patient care, including initial screening, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, care, reassessment, and discontinuation of care.
  • Formulate, maintain, support, monitor, and modify a patient-specific plan for care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
  • Plan and coordinate care, treatment, and rehabilitation for discharged patients.
  • Serve as a department-based role model and resource for policies, procedures, and patient care.
  • Assist others in setting patient care and department priorities, keeping in mind the education of self and others while maintaining a cohesive environment.
  • Collect clinical data; follow algorithms, decision trees, and protocols.
  • Match formal knowledge with clinical events to make appropriate decisions; use available resources as needed.
  • Document plan of care, care delivered, and patient and family outcomes.
  • Focus on the usual and customary needs of the patient and family; anticipate future needs; base care on standards and protocols; maintain a safe physical environment; acknowledge death as a potential outcome.
  • Consistently integrate age-specific concepts into patient care, taking into consideration both the patient's chronological age and developmental functioning.
  • Using self-management support, develop care goals and actions through partnerships with patients and families.
  • Facilitate patient and family learning by providing structured education based on the plan of care goals, and the needs of the patient and family; use teach back to evaluate effectiveness.
  • Recognize routine or obvious changing patient situations; in unusual care situations, seek help with needed to identify patient problem.
  • See the pieces or components; see patient and family within the isolated environment of the unit; see self as key resource to support the family through the healthcare experience through care coordination.
  • Sustain a working understanding of regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Support leadership in efforts to meet and sustain the regulatory compliance efforts of the department and hospital.
  • Monitor and comply with safety and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Ensure individual certifications and Safety College requirements are fulfilled in a timely basis.
  • Be mindful of CCHMC's processes and compliance with CMS standards and freely communicate safety and compliance concerns to leadership team members.
  • In the clinical setting, assist a physician in providing concussion education to patients and families and perform delegated clinical/clerical/administrative tasks.
  • Contribute to department/center program development through involvement in special projects.
  • May coordinate communication and ATC assignments for sporting events for professional/amateur teams.
  • Demonstrate consistent integration of the Interprofessional Practice Model (IPM) in all aspects of practice.
  • Maintain currency in field through continuing education, literature, and seminars, implement this knowledge into Sports Med clinical area.
  • Use self-appraisal performance review and peer review.
  • Demonstrate openness to coaching and mentoring from others.
  • Facilitate learning by assisting with peer and student learning experiences.
  • Work with department managers, interprofessional councils, and magnet reps to identify, share, implement, and evaluate safety best practices.
  • Collect and interpret complex patient data; make clinical judgments based on an immediate grasp of the whole picture; recognize patterns and trends by focusing on key elements while eliminating extraneous details.
  • Document and teach others to document the plan of care, care delivered, and patient/family outcomes.
  • Respond to subtle patient/family changes; engage with each unique patient/family in a compassionate manner; tailor caring practices to the individuality of patient/family; recognize the importance of a healing environment and tailor the environment to meet the needs of the patient/family; promote safety throughout patient/family transitions along the healthcare continuum.
  • Using self-management support, develop care goals and actions through partnerships with patients/families.
  • Adapt educational programs to meet the learning needs and styles of the patient/family; use teach back strategies to evaluate effectiveness.
  • Coordinate education with other members of the health care team.
