About The Position

The School Athletic Trainer works with athletes to prevent athletic injury and enhance performance using knowledge of nutrition, hygiene, psychology, conditioning and protective equipment. They develop training programs to prevent injuries and examine athlete's injuries while also showing them techniques to build their strength and avoid future or further injury. This role serves as a point of contact between area athletic programs and the physician practice, supporting Carilion's hallmarks of service excellence and quality. The Athletic Trainer provides support for clinical and medical staff in the delivery of quality medical care and assists with patient care as directed by the physician and clinical staff within their scope of training. Key functions include prevention, assessment, treatment (including first aid), and reconditioning of athletic injuries, as well as assisting in the development and implementation of a newly established sports medicine program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in health-related field.
  • Licensure as an Athletic Trainer with the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
  • Certification through the National Athletic Training Board of Certification.
  • AHA BLS-HCP (Life Support).
  • Effective interpersonal skills to communicate both in person and in writing in order to interact with management, doctors, professional staff, patients, general public and local schools and sports teams.
  • Keyboarding and utilization of automated computer systems, including electronic medical records.
  • Ability to assist with or transfer athletes of various weight/heights.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Good mobility skills.
  • Ability to walk long distances.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient care as directed by the physician and clinical staff within scope of training.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform the following functions regarding athletic injuries: prevention, assessment, treatment (including first aid) and reconditioning.
  • Collect data and perform patient assessment to include height, weight, vital signs, chief complaint, current medications, etc.
  • Perform initial patient evaluation and screens, report findings to physician, complete requisitions for lab, x-ray, mri, etc.
  • Carry out all prescribed treatments and recommendations by the physician to treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries.
  • Maintain work area, exam, treatment rooms, x-ray rooms and lab in a clean, safe manner.
  • Restock with supplies and instruments.
  • Sterilize reusable equipment as needed.
  • Observe all safety precautions and standards.
  • Assure proper disposal of specimens and contaminated waste.
  • Provide patient and community education in the areas of sports injury prevention and care.
  • Serve as a liaison between patient/athlete, physician, physician office staff and school personnel.
  • Document patient information in the electronic medical record in a timely manner.
  • Update information as indicated.
  • Record appointments of referrals and diagnostic studies.
  • Develop and distribute ongoing patient education information about athletic injuries, equipment, nutrition and exercise programs to obtain optimal performance.
  • Perform patient evaluation during post operative phases.
  • Provide education on home care plans for pain care, ADL's, mobility and exercise.
  • Perform clerical and office functions as directed.
  • Help to review charts the night before patient's appointment, making sure all needed information is in the chart: test results, referrals, lab results, etc.
  • Call the appropriate facility to retrieve the needed information if anything is missing.
  • Provide bracing and orthotic fabrication (DME) and applications, casting, suture/staple removal and post-operative wound assessment and care.
  • Provide patient brace/crutch fitting, production education, and gait training for all types of patients with/without assistive devices and with various weight bearing status and neurological conditions.
  • Work with schools to demonstrate and provide proper taping, strapping, bracing and fitting of athletic equipment.
  • Cover assigned pre-season physicals, sports games, and related events under the supervision of the program physician.
  • Provide education programs to school personnel, student athletes, and guardians about athletic injuries, equipment, nutrition and exercise programs to obtain optimal performance.
  • Coordinate pre- and post-participation exams.
  • Assist with acquiring protective equipment for athletes as needed.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of newly established sports medicine program.
