About The Position

All coaches should perform their coaching duties with the best interest of the athletes as their priority. Coaches should provide leadership, supervision, organization, and administration of the assigned athletic activity, and carry out the objectives of the total athletic program.

Requirements

  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to signing the contract.

Responsibilities

  • Program Structure: Varsity Head Coach – organizes and administers the program (includes varsity and junior varsity) which he/she coaches under the supervision of the athletic director and school administration. Varsity Assistant Coach – reports to the head varsity coach and performs duties as assigned. Junior Varsity Head Coach – organizes and administers the junior varsity team which he/she coaches under the supervision of the varsity head coach, athletic director, and school administration; assist head varsity coach during playoffs. Volunteer Coach – reports to the head varsity coach and performs duties as assigned.
  • Each coach is responsible for the following: Keeping practice areas and locker rooms in order. Storing equipment neatly and using equipment properly. Pride in the equipment and facilities is of primary importance to all athletes and coaches. Keeping storage areas locked.
  • Pre-Season: Be responsible for information contained in the Baltimore County Interscholastic Handbook, the MPSSAA Handbook, the National Federation Sport rulebook, and the MPSSAA and Baltimore County sports bulletins. Be responsive to the principal and athletic director for the entire program. Distribute all forms to potential student athletes. Mandatory to attend coaches' meetings and rules interpretation meetings pertaining to your sport. Prepare equipment and first aid supplies. Check schedules: games, transportation, and officials. Recruit and train student managers.
  • In-Season: Conform to the National Federation Coaches Code of Ethics and the BCPS Code of Conduct. Be prompt and consistent in meeting the team for practice and contests. Arrange coverage if necessary. Inventory and issue equipment and uniforms. Issue appropriate rosters and schedules to teachers, opponents, and news media. Set up the field, court, etc., prior to a game with the equipment and supplies needed. Direct completed score results to appropriate personnel and officials’ vouchers to athletic director immediately following a contest. Report scores to all media outlets and appropriate school personnel (Digital Sports, County Sports Zone). Meet the responsibilities outlined in the MPSSAA bulletin. Consult with the athletic director if the athletic contest is to be postponed due to inclement weather. Monitor students' grades throughout the season. Compile applicable statistics on players' performance throughout the season. Notify the home school if unforeseen travel conditions would delay normal starting time. Report all accidents and injuries on the athletic injury report provided by the Office of Athletics. Supervise the team and monitor the locker room until all team members leave the area of responsibility. Provide adequate changing facilities for visiting team and officials.
  • Post-Season: Collect, clean, and inventory uniforms and equipment. Submit a list of squad members who completed the season to the Athletic Director. Submit a list of players who failed to return equipment or uniforms. Compile applicable statistics and records and attend the final coaches' meeting for your sport. Submit a list of equipment and uniform needs to the athletic director. Spring sports should do this prior to their season. Return keys to the athletic director. Distribute awards. Evaluate all members of the coaching staff with recommendations to the athletic director. All coaches within Baltimore County Public Schools must complete certain end of season responsibilities for their coaching assignment to be considered finalized. Failure to comply may affect future assignments and, in some cases, final coaching stipend payment.
