About The Position

All Athletic Coach hires and work schedules for the school year are contingent upon student enrollment, sports sign ups, and sports schedules developed for the season. This role involves instructing and coaching students in the sport of volleyball, helping to arrange playing schedules, and performing all associated coaching responsibilities. The coach is also required to attend all specified meetings and trainings.

Requirements

  • Fundamentals of Coaching (HIGH SCHOOL) certification (does not expire).
  • Middle School Coaching (MIDDLE SCHOOL) certification (does not expire).
  • Concussion in Sports certification (expires every 3 years).
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest certification (expires every 2 years).
  • Heat Illness Prevention certification (expires every 2 years).
  • CPR & FIRST AID certification from an instructor-led class (expires every 2 years).
  • Provide written evidence indicating knowledge of the coaching theory and techniques in the sport (e.g., college coursework, prior coaching experience, prior participation at high school level, or in-service training).
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of the sport at the high school level.
  • Knowledge of adolescent psychology as it relates to sports participation (college courses or prior active involvement with youth in school/community sports programs).
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability sufficient to maintain high standards of safety in all aspects of coaching at practices as well as contests.
  • Demonstrated high ethical standards related to sportsmanship, fair play, and relationships with students.
  • Recognition of the need to communicate with parents/guardians and appropriate school staff members regarding problems or emergencies.
  • Knowledge of school policies and California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) policies related to athletics.
  • Ability to meet the standards for the district’s athletic program, including instilling teamwork, commitment, and discipline.
  • Ability to develop positive relations and support from parents and the community.
  • Ability to offer academic encouragement and support to students.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certificated employees of Oakland Unified School District who possess a valid CA teaching credential.
  • Previous successful experiences coaching the sport at the level of the vacancy.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct and coach students in the sport indicated.
  • Help arrange playing schedules.
  • Perform/assist in all coaching responsibilities associated with the position.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings as specified by OAL.
