About The Position

This is an unpaid fellowship through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program. The fellow selected for this role will not receive compensation or benefits from GDIT and will not be an employee, agent or contractor of GDIT but rather will remain an employee of the DoW and will receive compensation and benefits through the DoW. Through the Department of War (DoW) SkillBridge Program, GDIT offers transitioning service members the opportunity to gain hands‑on training and professional experience as an Anti‑Submarine Warfare (ASW) Training Fellow, supporting Undersea Warfare (USW) training delivery, Combat System employment, and SONAR operations instruction in a high‑fidelity training environment. In this Fellowship, the participant will gain exposure to ship‑embedded training systems, shore‑based tactical training systems, curriculum development processes, ASW tactical scenario execution, and instructor‑led training for critical tactical watch stations. The Fellow will train alongside experienced SONAR and ASW warfare instructors to develop foundational expertise in the AN/SQQ‑89A(V)15 SONAR Suite, tactical employment of ASW systems, embedded training tools, and dynamic assessment of watch stander performance. The ASW Training Fellow will learn how advanced tactical training is developed, delivered, and evaluated while contributing to modernization updates, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) development, scenario execution, Formal Course Reviews (FCRs), and instructor support activities within Surface Combat Systems Training Command (SCSTC) Detachment Southwest’s high‑demand training mission.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related technical discipline, OR equivalent combination of military experience, technical training, and formal certifications.
  • 5+ years of experience in Undersea Warfare (USW), SONAR operations, or Anti‑Submarine Warfare (ASW) tactical employment.
  • Experience as a qualified SONAR Supervisor or Acoustic Sensor Operator‑Supervisor (ASO‑S) on AN/SQQ‑89A(V)15 combat systems.
  • Working knowledge of maintenance principles related to the AN/SQQ‑89A(V)15 SONAR Suite and associated auxiliary systems.
  • Strong background in Acoustic Analysis and Target Motion Analysis (TMA) supporting ASW tactical decision‑making.
  • Familiarity with the Combat Systems Operational Sequencing System (CSOSS) used for tactical decision‑making and combat system readiness.
  • Familiarity with embedded training systems including SAST, BFTT, and TCW.
  • Ability to deliver and support high‑tempo military training environments.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while supporting instruction.
  • Strong communication and mentoring skills aligned with Sailor development.
  • Understanding of maintenance considerations for associated ASW auxiliary systems, including Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes (SVTT).
  • Active Secret security clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • On‑site attendance at customer site in San Diego, CA.
  • Fellowship duration aligned with DoW SkillBridge requirements.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty
  • Can participate within the last 6 months of separation or retirement
  • Will receive an honorable discharge
  • Has taken any service TAP/TGPS
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months
  • Received Unit Commander (first O-4/Field Grade commander in chain of command) written authorization and approval to participate in DoW SkillBridge Program prior to start of the fellowship.

Nice To Haves

  • Navy Enlisted Classification (NEC) 805A Instructor qualification highly desired; experience in curriculum development strongly preferred.
  • Experience supporting Cruiser‑Destroyer (CRUDES) Basic Phase Training Cycles or fleet‑level ASW exercise execution.
  • Designation letters for Anti‑Submarine Warfare Coordinator (ASWC) or Surface Warfare Coordinator (SUWC) are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in classroom and scenario‑based instruction supporting SONAR Supervisor and Acoustic Sensor Operator (ASO) training.
  • Support scenario execution using ship‑embedded and shore‑based training systems including the Surface ASW Synthetic Trainer (SAST), Battle Force Tactical Trainer (BFTT), and Trainer Control Workstation (TCW).
  • Observe and assist in the assessment of watch standers during ASW tactical employment scenarios.
  • Contribute to curriculum updates, lesson plan reviews, instructor guides, and training material development.
  • Support modernization efforts including SOP creation, course overhaul projects, and pilot course validation.
  • Assist in developing, testing, maintaining, and delivering ASW and Combat Systems training programs aligned with SCSTC and Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) standards.
  • Help establish and review course content, learning objectives, and criteria for evaluating instructional effectiveness.
  • Participate in instructor‑led training sessions, tracking trainee progress and maintaining training documentation.
  • Maintain situational awareness of emerging Navy ASW technology, tactical procedures, and system updates.
  • Support Combat Systems Training Team (CSTT) functions in supervised environments.
  • Assist with NETC‑aligned instructor qualification processes and evaluation activities.
  • Provide instructional and administrative support to the Site Lead/Manager as assigned.
