About The Position

The Assistant Debate Coach is responsible for assisting the head coach in organizing and supervising the debate program. This includes instructing athletes in debate skills, strategy, and preparation, while also fostering character development, self-discipline, and self-confidence. The coach will work under the guidance of the athletic director and high school principals, ensuring adherence to school policies and promoting the sport within the school and community.

Requirements

  • Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (Major sports).
  • Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport.
  • Ability to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Ability to serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes.
  • Ability to upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in organizing and supervising the debate program.
  • Instruct athletes in fundamental debate skills, strategy, and preparation.
  • Foster character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in student athletes.
  • Serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instruction and actions.
  • Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
  • Implement athletic policies approved by the school board.
  • Ensure adherence to system, state, and league regulations.
  • Understand and follow the proper administrative line of command.
  • Assist in establishing the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught.
  • Train and inform staff, encouraging professional growth.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff effectiveness.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the athletic director/principal.
  • Assist the athletic director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for events.
  • Assist in preparation for scheduled events or practices and adhere to facility times.
  • Coordinate program with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Provide proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment and sites.
  • Advise the athletic director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes.
  • Serve as a mentor to each athlete to promote character traits.
  • Give constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant during practices, games, and travel.
  • Provide training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete.
  • Initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies.
  • Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries and submit it within 24 hours.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline and delineate procedures concerning due process.
  • Contract parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
  • Participate in the budgeting function by establishing requirements for the next season.
  • Recommend equipment guidelines.
  • Operate within budget appropriations.
  • Be accountable for all equipment and collect the cost of any lost or unreturned equipment.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment.
  • Submit annual inventory and current records concerning equipment.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizing entry, issue, or requisition of equipment.
  • Permit athletes in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness.
  • Be responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
  • Organize parents, coaches, players, and guests for preseason meetings.
  • Promote the sport within the school and outside the school through various means.
  • Be responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Present information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
