About The Position

RBC Partners is the VC/PE investment platform of RBC, working alongside the Enterprise Strategy and Corporate Development groups. This includes both direct VC and 3rd party managed VC and PE fund investments. In this role you will work with our partners in other RBC business units where direct venture capital investments or fund investments support our strategic objectives. As it relates to direct investments, our primary focus is on investments that can help drive innovation and support strategic objectives in RBC. You will be part of a small team with active involvement in identifying, developing, and working on VC investments as well as fund investments in support of RBC’s strategic priorities. You need to be able to thrive in a fluid, fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous, environment with many stakeholders. As an Associate you will be actively involved in the day-to-day activities of our team in a number of areas.

Requirements

  • Background in AI/ML investing or experience at an AI-focused startup or working closely with AI teams
  • 2-3 years Venture Capital experience
  • B. Eng., CFA, and/or MBA preferred and/or equivalent experience.
  • Outstanding analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communication/presentation skills
  • Detail-oriented, proactive, and self-motivated with strong curiosity, drive and the ability to self-direct – your work and time will be somewhat open-ended by nature and you must be able to identify and execute on opportunities to contribute to the team sometimes with little direction
  • Advanced skills with Excel, PowerPoint and Word including excellent financial modelling skills
  • Entrepreneurial attitude and interest in working with seed and early stage companies
  • Solid understanding of business and financial concepts
  • Strong interpersonal skills - you'll often be talking to entrepreneurs and other investors
  • Strong organizational skills - you’ll be keeping track of documents for a large portfolio of investments

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to FinTech and financial services innovation
  • Experience in one of Capital Markets, Investment Banking or Management Consulting.
  • Ideally some prior startup and/or programming experience

Responsibilities

  • Performing detailed market and company research as it relates to sectors of interest and due diligence for potential investments.
  • Lead financial modeling and valuation analysis as applicable to the investment opportunity.
  • Testing products and services.
  • Competitive market analysis.
  • Speaking with industry and technical experts.
  • Conducting reference checks of company founders and executives as well as with customers and partners.
  • Contribute to the drafting of investment memos.
  • Working with our portfolio companies, including potentially supporting them with research projects, competitor analysis, valuation work, financial modeling, etc.
  • Network with peers in other VC Firms and generally in the startup community.
  • Build a relationship with VC Funds to understand their portfolio and pipeline where possible.
  • Stay close to market developments to help identify new investment trends and opportunities.
  • Research specific sectors of strategic interest to identify and connect with companies that could be interesting investment targets.
  • Deal screening: call and/or meet with prospects, evaluate opportunities.
