Our team is seeking an Associate Vice President to join our Strategic Communications team in New York, NY or Washington DC executing cutting-edge communications strategy for clients ranging from nonprofits and advocacy groups to media start-ups and industry leaders.

Requirements

  • 8+ years working in a communications role in an in-house, government, consultancy environment.
  • Experience managing strategic communications programs and sensitive communications issues.
  • Wide-ranging relationships with the media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Creative and energetic approach to solving client issues.
  • Experience working with multiple clients at the same time.
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Creativity, energy, detail-orientation, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

Responsibilities

  • Owns client relationships and serves as the day-to-day lead across multiple small accounts or large workstreams.
  • Manages timelines and deliverables for multiple clients with minimal oversight, proactively addresses issues, and builds trusted client partnerships.
  • Leads the development of high-impact communication materials, including message frameworks, strategy memos, presentations, press releases, talking points, op-eds, and speeches.
  • Ensures all content drives strategic goals, resonates with key audiences, and reflects deep understanding of the media landscape and stakeholder priorities.
  • Strategically uses media tools and networks to shape storylines, provide counsel, and identify high-value opportunities.
  • Cultivates and deepens media relationships, guides teams in engagement strategies, and ensures alignment with client and organizational goals.
  • Strategically anticipates evolving storylines and is able to oversee the implementation of multiple narratives, targeting different stakeholders at the same time.
  • Edits and finalizes narrative content drafted by junior staff.
  • Effectively leads cross-functional collaboration across communications, data, creative, and paid media teams to deliver cohesive, high-impact work.
  • Builds strong internal networks and plays a key role in fostering alignment on behalf of clients.
  • Leads productive internal and external meetings and tailors messaging to the audience.
  • Communicates effectively up, down, and across teams.
  • Provides strategic guidance to junior staff, delivering clear, actionable feedback that sharpens thinking and strengthens execution.
  • Actively mentors team members to support their growth and development.
  • Drives projects efficiently and independently, managing small teams and overseeing multiple initiatives from start to finish.
  • Recognized by client leads, managers and overall client teams as a critical contributor.
  • Crafts clear work plans and delegates effectively.
  • Drafts and oversees development of clear, strategic, and persuasive content across projects.
  • Provides guidance and editorial oversight, elevating team outputs through thoughtful feedback and mentorship.
  • Leverages tools and sources to generate insights that shape strategy, applying seasoned judgment rooted in client and stakeholder priorities.
  • Ensures deliverables drive long-term goals.
  • Anticipates gaps or misalignments before they arise, guides teams to course-correct, and ensures alignment with strategic objectives.
