About The Position

The Associate Vice President (AVP) of Philanthropy and Strategic Grants serves as VOA Mid-States’ senior leader for private philanthropy, donor relationships, and grant development. Reporting to the Vice President of External Relations, the AVP builds and executes strategies that grow individual, corporate, foundation, and grant revenue across VOA’s four-state service area. This role carries the external credibility needed to engage major donors, foundations, corporate partners, board members, and senior leadership, and leads the development team responsible for turning those relationships into sustained, diversified philanthropic revenue.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, communications, business, or a related field
  • 7+ years of progressive fund development experience, including major gifts and grant management
  • Demonstrated success cultivating and closing five- and six-figure gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Experience supervising or directing development staff
  • Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge or a comparable donor CRM, with disciplined data and moves-management practices
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including grant narrative writing and executive-level donor correspondence
  • Ability to travel across VOA Mid-States’ Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Southern Indiana service area

Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of high-capacity individual, corporate, and foundation prospects
  • Lead donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Develop individualized donor strategies and documented next moves
  • Prepare the CEO, board members, and other executives for donor meetings
  • Lead major-gift and campaign strategies
  • Coordinate donor tours, mission experiences, impact reports, and recognition
  • Expand philanthropic relationships in current and emerging VOA markets
  • Own the organization’s comprehensive grant pipeline
  • Lead prospect identification, grant positioning, proposal strategy, and writing standards
  • Make recommendations about which opportunities VOA should pursue
  • Assign proposal responsibilities and establish internal deadlines
  • Ensure program, finance, quality, and operational leaders participate early in proposal development
  • Conduct or oversee final narrative and submission review
  • Maintain relationships with foundation and corporate funders
  • Coordinate renewal and stewardship strategies for existing funders
  • Ensure a clear transition from grant award to program implementation and reporting
  • Develop annual and multi-year fundraising plans
  • Establish revenue goals by donor and funding channel
  • Maintain accurate probability-weighted revenue projections
  • Monitor donor retention, upgrades, acquisitions, grants submitted, grants awarded, and unrestricted revenue
  • Present regular fundraising reports to senior leadership and the board
  • Strengthen consistent use of Raiser’s Edge and moves management
  • Supervises or directs the work of: Grant writers and grant consultants, Development or philanthropy managers, Development coordinator, Donor database and CRM support, Other fund-development positions approved through the staffing plan
