About The Position

Claremont McKenna College (CMC) is seeking an Associate Vice President for Construction Management and Capital Projects to lead the successful development and implementation of its Campus Master Plan. This role involves overseeing new construction projects, managing a small staff, coordinating with vendors, serving as the primary liaison to the CMC Board of Trustees Campus Planning & Facilities Services committee, and working closely with local, state, and regional agencies. CMC is undergoing a significant growth phase, with plans to double its campus footprint over the next decade, including new academic, residential, sports, and recreational facilities. The AVP will report to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (EVP/COO) and will play a crucial role in managing capital projects from planning and budgeting through to final occupancy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, architecture, business, or other related field, or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Ten or more years of experience with increasing responsibilities in working with engineers, permit approval processes, construction management, project management, architects, contractors, and large construction projects.
  • Valid driver’s license or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy to drive College-owned vehicles.
  • Knowledge of construction budget management practices.
  • High level of knowledge in project management, construction projects, utility distribution systems, site work, etc.
  • Experience with contract documentation and project development from preliminary planning through final occupancy on new construction.
  • Experience in project management of healthcare projects, research projects, and/or higher education projects.
  • Experience in review and selection of professional consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, communication, problem solving, and report writing skills.
  • Computer proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, and other relevant software programs.
  • Project management experience through all stages of capital projects including programming, planning, design, construction, contract administration, commissioning, and occupancy.
  • Experience in conducting project team meetings.
  • Skill and efficacy in working with a variety of populations in a collaborative manner.
  • Work effectively as part of an executive leadership team to build relationships that create trust, open communication, and innovative problem-solving.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and supervision for a small Construction Management and Capital Projects team.
  • Manage and administer capital projects, including all daily activities associated with planning, budgeting, contract document preparation, project meetings, and oversight of construction activities.
  • Provide expertise and consultation on the College Master Plan process and manage the Master Plan process in coordination with the EVP/COO.
  • Perform a wide range of administrative and professional duties in connection with coordinating, scheduling, and managing capital project construction activities and project-based budgeting.
  • Develop and maintain project scopes and schedules, and coordinate project schedules with affected campus partners.
  • Prepare materials for the four-times annual Board of Trustee meetings and work closely with the leadership of the Campus Planning and Facilities Services Trustee Committee.
  • Serve as primary liaison with general contractors, project managers, engineers, and city and county officials for active and planned projects.
  • Manage construction projects and/or supervision of project managers.
  • Plan and monitor project budgets, working closely with the College’s Vice President for Business and Chief Financial Officer.
  • Coordinate Facilities activities with other College and The Claremont Colleges resources such as IT, voice, data, and campus safety, etc.
  • Review and issue contracts and manage bid processes.
  • Work in close partnership with the Assistant Vice President for Facilities and Campus Services in their efforts to manage the College’s asset renewal and replacement program.
  • Closely coordinate with other College faculty, staff, and students communicating regularly on project pathways, deadlines, and proactively soliciting input on program plans.
  • Ongoing implementation of 2012 Development Agreement and Campus Master Plan with the City of Claremont.
  • Ongoing implementation of 2016 Development Agreement for the East Campus with the cities of Claremont and Upland.
  • Assist with the College’s long term space utilization plan.
  • Manage the major renovations of the College’s adjacent owned homes in the Arbol Verde neighborhood.
