About The Position

The BC SPCA is seeking an Associate Veterinarian to deliver the highest quality of medical care and provide exceptional service to clients and patients. This role involves advocating for animal welfare, educating stakeholders on pet health, and supporting organizational goals through training and mentorship. The position is a temporary, full-time role with benefits, ending on May 31, 2028, working 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, at the Vancouver Animal Hospital.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice medicine and in good standing with the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia (CVBC), or the ability to attain licensure before the date of hire.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated abilities in consistently practicing quality veterinary medicine commensurate with training and experience.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing high-quality client and personal services.
  • Knowledge of principles and methods for promoting and selling products or services, including assessing client adherence to treatment recommendations and choosing appropriate strategies.
  • Demonstrated excellence in active listening, critical thinking, complex problem solving, time management, multi-tasking, timely completion of duties, good judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong computer skills for client information management, ordering tests, and communication.
  • Motivated and confident with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Friendly, personable, and patient demeanor, capable of respectfully handling diverse situations and clientele, including discussing difficult topics like costs and quality of life.
  • Ability to fulfill physical demands including standing for long periods, walking, sitting, and lifting heavy objects up to 20kg.
  • Commitment to and ability to work safely with and around animals, embracing low-stress handling techniques.
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission, and strategic directions of the BC SPCA.

Responsibilities

  • Assimilate information through history taking, physical examination, and diagnostic workup to make clinical decisions.
  • Perform and interpret laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests, including parasitology, hematology, and urinalysis.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment, such as radiographic equipment, and interpret the resulting images.
  • Administer anesthetics, perform surgery, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery with technical team assistance.
  • Establish trust and gain client confidence and compliance by delivering preventive care, developing treatment plans, communicating home care instructions, and planning follow-up.
  • Deal with clients sensitively, tactfully, and professionally, understanding and utilizing incremental care principles with low-income clients.
  • Understand and adhere to shelter medicine principles, behavior modification, and BC SPCA shelter medicine protocols for shelter animals.
  • Provide guidance and leadership to the healthcare team regarding daily schedules and caseloads, delegating tasks to improve care and service.
  • Contribute to client acquisition and retention efforts, including communications, media, and fundraising.
  • Support practice and organizational goals through training, mentorship, and professional development, attending team meetings and training.
  • Advocate for animals by building strong relationships with clients and other BC SPCA departments.
  • Contribute to the human-pet bond by educating clients, staff, and the public on pet health and animal welfare.
  • Participate in business development as required.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team and practice management on daily schedules and caseloads.
  • Mentor healthcare team members and fellow veterinarians to positively influence care and service.
  • Fulfill DR duties as defined in CVBC Bylaws, including controlled drug management and record maintenance, if requested.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
