About The Position

The Division of Animal Resources within the Emory National Primate Research Center at Emory University Field Station is seeking an Associate Veterinary Scientist to serve as the Assistant Director of Animal Resources. This role involves collaborating to advance science and improve the health and well-being of humans and non-human primates. The position is primarily based at the Field Station in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and is part of a larger veterinary team responsible for the care and well-being of a large population of nonhuman primates and a small rodent colony. The role provides preventative and clinical veterinary care, research support to scientists, and contributes to IACUC, colony management, behavioral management, and training activities. The candidate will also participate in the planning, design, or renovation of animal research facilities and lead the supervision of veterinary technicians and veterinarians, contributing to Emory's ACLAM residency training program.

Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent with 6 years of experience in laboratory animal medicine, 2 of which have supervisory responsibilities with ACLAM diplomate OR 10 years of experience without ACLAM.
  • Licensed to practice veterinary medicine.
  • Training or experience in nonhuman primate research medicine.
  • Excellent interpersonal and team building skills.
  • Strong written/oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in surgical and medical procedures in nonhuman primates.
  • Experience with nonhuman primate breeding colony management.
  • Maintain State of Georgia Vet License.
  • Maintain USDA Accreditation.
  • Maintain DEA License.
  • Maintain Georgia Pharmacy License.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a major program within the Emory National Primate Research Center (EPC) Division of Animal Resources (DAR), potentially including pathology laboratory and quality assurance, the EPC DAR training program, or clinical medicine services.
  • Manage direct or indirect reports.
  • Investigate and recommend potential alternative approaches to improve the quality of results.
  • Demonstrate increased responsibility through management of teams and leadership of projects by applying advanced knowledge, skills, and input necessary for protocol development, as well as facilitating in some training aspects of other lab members.
  • Oversee quality assurance of work conducted by other staff members.
  • Assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific programmatic areas within the EPC DAR.
  • With the approval of the responsible faculty director, may be principal investigators on funded proposals.
  • Provide clinical care of all animal species at the Field Station (monkeys and chimpanzees).
  • Perform surgical intervention and support as necessary.
  • Provide emergency veterinary support on weekday evenings and weekends at the Field Station, on a rotating basis.
  • Provide emergency veterinary support on holidays at both the Main Center and Field Station, on a rotating basis.
  • Participate in clinical and pathology rounds.
  • Communicate and guide other Field Station units (Colony Management, Animal Care, Research Labs, and Behavioral Management) regarding the clinical health and welfare of animals.
  • Lead bi-monthly colony management committee meetings and monthly field station administration meetings.
  • Participate in the Monkey Allocation Committee for selection of animals for research assignment.
  • Oversee the SPF breeding program and part of the U42 grant to support the SPF program.
  • Oversee breeding programs.
  • Manage quarantine animals.
  • Process animals for shipments.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the Main Center veterinarians for animal transfers.
  • Provide guidance on protocol development to investigators, including IACUC veterinary consults.
  • Collect research sample specimens, including rectal and lymph node biopsies, bone marrow and lymph node aspirates, CSF collection, etc.
  • Communicate with investigators regarding Field Station assigned research animals.
  • Initiate and/or collaborate in clinical and laboratory animals medicine research studies, including project design, proposal preparation, and publication of findings.
  • Prepare case reports, abstracts, posters, and platform sessions for presentation at professional meetings.
  • Manage veterinary technicians and Field Station based veterinarians.
  • Provide guidance, collaboration, and daily oversight of other Field Station Animal Resource units.
  • Ensure ongoing activities are in compliance with current regulations, institutional SOPs and approved IACUC protocols.
  • Participate in committees (e.g. IACUC, Safety, and Allocation committees).
  • Manage budgets.
  • Contribute to the preparation of regulatory reporting (AAALAC PD, USDA Annual Report, etc.).
  • Contribute to the preparation of grant applications to support Field Station activities (P51, U42, C06, etc.).
  • Prepare for and lead role in IACUC and USDA inspections at FS, as well as NIH and AAALAC site visits.
  • Maintain Licenses: State of Georgia Vet License, USDA Accreditation, DEA License, and Georgia Pharmacy License.
  • Participate in NPRC Consortium Working Groups (Breeding and Colony Management Consortium).
  • Manage preventative health for monkeys and chimpanzees.
  • Participate in routine examinations of monkeys and chimps.
  • Participate in the assessment of quarantine animals.
  • Oversee and train veterinary technicians, externs, interns, and residents.
  • Participate in monthly training sessions, including primate grand rounds, histopathology rounds, and the journal club.
  • Participate in informal didactic training of residents and others.
  • Train research and animal care staff as needed.
