About The Position

The Boeing Company is seeking an Associate Software Engineer to join our Phantom Works software team in Berkeley, MO. This position will focus on supporting the Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) Software Engineering organization. Phantom Works is where imagination meets engineering excellence — a place where bold ideas are shaped to transform the future of defense. Driven by curiosity and relentless problem-solving, our team pushes boundaries across aerospace, autonomy, emerging technologies and advanced materials to create breakthrough capabilities that keep people and warfighters safe, and missions successful. With a culture of collaboration, integrity, and rigorous testing, Phantom Works transforms daring concepts into trusted, operational solutions that inspire confidence and expand what’s possible in the skies and beyond. In this role, you will develop reusable software and maintain software services that support manned, unmanned, and autonomous aircraft programs. You will focus on building containerized C++ services, implementing standards-based interfaces (OMS/UCI), and contributing to shared infrastructure that enables autonomy development in both simulation and flight environments.

  • Active U.S. Secret Security Clearance
  • 2+ years of experience developing software using C++
  • Experience working with Linux
  • Experience with GitLab or similar version control tools
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Service-based architectures such as REST/gRPC APIs, message-based or microservice systems, and inter-process communication
  • Containerized development and deployment (e.g., Docker, Podman, Kubernetes)
  • Real-time or near-real-time applications, simulations, or high-performance computing environments
  • Software development lifecycle practices such as requirements analysis, design, implementation, testing, configuration management, and issue tracking
  • Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) and modern DevOps/DevSecOps practices, including automated build, test, security scanning, and deployment pipelines

Nice To Haves

  • Strong fundamentals in AI/ML—such as supervised and unsupervised learning, neural networks, and reinforcement learning
  • Interest in applying AI and LLMs to aerospace and defense use cases
  • Well-versed in autonomous systems, robotics, and/or defense mission systems
  • Highly preferred experience working with OMS (Open Mission Systems) or UCI (Universal Command and Control Interface) standards
  • Experience with Git-based workflows, CI/CD tools such as GitLab CI or Jenkins, and Agile development
  • Proficiency with build systems like CMake, Conan, and Bazel (or similar)
  • Experience using Python scripting for testing and automation
  • Familiarity with message-passing frameworks such as DDS, ZeroMQ, or gRPC
  • Web, mobile, or visualization frameworks (e.g., React, Blazor, iOS/Android, Unity, Unreal Engine)
  • Use of modern AI/agentic coding assistants and integration of large language model (LLM) APIs into applications
  • Cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) and interest in designing, deploying, and operating applications and LLM inference workloads in the cloud

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain C++ autonomy services within Phantom Works autonomy platforms
  • Implement and maintain standards-based interfaces (OMS/UCI) for inter-service communication
  • Develop and maintain containerized services using Docker/Podman in Linux environments
  • Integrate services across simulation and flight environments
  • Participate in code reviews, unit testing, and CI/CD pipeline maintenance
  • Document service interfaces, architectures, and integration patterns
  • Contribute to DevSecOps practices including automated builds, static analysis, and security scanning
  • Track work items and participate in Agile sprint activities
  • Collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team and follow established engineering processes
