About The Position

The Hartford is seeking a Junior Software Engineer within the Global Specialty organization. This team builds and modernizes the technology that powers submission intake, data enrichment, underwriting decisioning, and rating workflows across Global Specialty lines of business. This is an early career role for engineers who want to grow deep technical skills in Java based services, data persistence, and performance critical systems, while learning how complex insurance workflows are automated at scale.

Requirements

  • 1–3 years of software development experience, including academic or internship projects.
  • Strong understanding of Object-Oriented design, Java.J2ee technologies , front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, Angular/React, XML, XSLT, SQL), and cloud platforms (preferably AWS, GCP).
  • Must have strong working experience as a Designer/Developer of REST/SOAP API services.
  • Experience with agile or scrum methodologies.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship.
  • The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of Orchestration frameworks like Temporal is a nice to have.
  • Experience with continuous integration and DevOps tools (GitHub, Jenkins, Rally, SonarQube).
  • Passion for staying current with technology trends, experimenting with modern technologies, and participating in internal tech communities.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the design, development, testing, and maintenance of Java/J2EE applications for E2E underwriting lifecycle.
  • Build and enhance Spring Boot–based REST APIs under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Implement data persistence using ORM frameworks (Hibernate/JPA) with PostgreSQL and exposure to NoSQL data stores.
  • Assist with caching strategies (e.g., in-memory or distributed caching) to improve throughput and response times.
  • Support integration patterns across intake, rating, and downstream policy systems.
  • Write clean, testable, and maintainable code aligned with engineering standards.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, backlog refinement, and sprint delivery.
  • Troubleshoot defects, analyze logs, and assist with performance tuning.
  • Learn and apply modern engineering practices, including CI/CD and automated testing.
  • Proactively communicate risks, issues, and mitigations to stakeholders.
  • Lead innovative efforts, leveraging modern technologies to solve customer problems.
  • Knowledge of implementing solutions through Gen AI (Artificial Intelligence) is a plus.
