About The Position

The Associate Senior Counsel is a member of the Investment Law team and serves as the primary legal advisor and subject matter expert in support of The Cigna Group’s corporate leasing and real estate portfolio. The Associate Senior Counsel shall assume ownership of all legal needs of Cigna’s Global Real Estate organization and shall coordinate with the business to deliver practical legal guidance enabling innovation and transformation, while advancing outcomes designed to accelerate Enterprise growth and strategy. To be successful, this individual must independently, proactively and creatively address the legal needs of the Global Real Estate organization, while evaluating and designing legal structures to manage risk, uphold integrity and adapt to an evolving regulatory environment. As a member of Cigna Legal, this individual will be joining a team that anticipates and manages risk in a complex business, legislative and regulatory environment, and is trusted to deliver practical, strategic legal solutions that enable confident decision-making allowing the Enterprise to move forward with clarity and confidence.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from an accredited law school and minimum of 8+ years of experience in leasing and commercial real estate practice in the private sector.
  • Proven ability to identify and mitigate legal risks.
  • Demonstrated track record of establishing client confidence and personal credibility.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to influence and negotiate successfully.
  • Experience interfacing across a broad array of stakeholders in a complex organizational structure with the ability to maneuver through business barriers to deliver strategic insight and facilitate solutions.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently in managing competing priorities under deadline pressure with integrity and while championing ethical conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Review and prepare documentation for new and existing leased and owned corporate facilities.
  • Negotiate and draft leases, subleases, purchase and sale agreements and other commercial real estate documents, including estoppels and subordination, non-disturbance and attornment agreements.
  • Manage Landlord – Tenant disputes, including responding to and preparing demand letters.
  • Consult and advise on corporate leasing, acquisition and disposition strategy.
  • Oversee property tax matters with local government entities for owned facilities.
  • As needed, manage and coordinate legal services provided by outside counsel.
  • Render legal support relating to real estate investment matters and other real estate special projects as required.
