About The Position

LANXESS is seeking an Associate Scientist to join their team in Wilmington. This role involves conducting microbial experiments to evaluate the efficacy of preservation chemistries in industrial materials. The scientist will be responsible for setting up experiments independently, employing aseptic techniques, and providing input on experimental design and methodology. Key responsibilities include generating and analyzing data, documenting results in electronic lab notebooks, maintaining daily workflow, and collaborating with a team of scientists, technologists, and account managers to support project completion. The role also involves direct customer interaction for study design and results presentation, as well as providing technical support and troubleshooting for laboratory processes and instrumentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is required in a Biological Science field (such as microbiology, molecular biology, biology, biotechnology, etc. with a preference for microbiology).
  • A minimum of 2 years of working experience in a microbiology laboratory setting is required, preferably with some experience working in a BSL-2 laboratory
  • Knowledge of basic microbiology techniques, including use of aseptic techniques to prepare, maintain, and handle microbial cultures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, specifically Excel, Word, SharePoint
  • Strong initiative, independent work with minimal instruction, and assertive problem-solving.
  • A self-starter with the ability to balance multiple projects on different timelines and demonstrate strong attention to detail.
  • Customer-centric mindset and ability to rapidly respond and support dynamic customer and market needs.
  • Sets high standards of personal excellence and demonstrates these behaviors in work habits.
  • Proven ability and passion for working within a highly collaborative environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with standard laboratory practices (E.g., ASTM, ISO) is a plus.
  • Awareness of BSL-2 procedures is a plus.
  • A Master of Science degree in a Biological Science is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting microbial experiments to evaluate the efficacy of different preservation chemistries in a variety of industrial materials.
  • Setting up experiments independently, ensuring proper controls are in place while employing aseptic technique and other basic microbiology techniques.
  • Providing input on experimental design, optimizing lab methodologies, generating and analyzing data, identifying erroneous or unexpected results, and making suggestions based on analysis and conclusions.
  • Maintaining electronic databases, diligently documenting results in electronic laboratory notebooks, and timely reporting to internal and external customers.
  • Maintaining daily workflow and operations within the immediate workgroup in the laboratory.
  • Working with scientists, technologists, and account managers in a team-based environment to support and drive projects to completion for sales of preservation solutions to customers.
  • At times, the individual will work directly with customers to design studies and present results.
  • Providing technical help and troubleshooting for existing laboratory processes and instrumentation, including installation, validation, and maintenance of new equipment.
