About The Position

The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. is seeking an Associate Scientist/Engineer for its Technical Products Research group within Global R&I (Research & Innovation). This role is responsible for contributing to the development of new and improved products by deeply understanding consumer needs, translating them into product design features, technologies, and claims. The position involves defining targets for product and packaging performance, working across various categories on upstream research projects, and collaborating with innovation partners in Advanced Technologies, Formulation, Packaging, and Processing. The Associate Scientist will act as the voice of the consumer, guiding technology innovation teams on the implications of their technical choices and ensuring a holistic technical design that integrates products, packaging/devices, and regimens. They will develop technical benefit statements and core claim spaces for new technologies. For entry-level candidates, the role involves planning and executing work with managerial support, ensuring quality and timely delivery of projects, building category understanding, and becoming proficient in departmental standard operating procedures and methodologies. The role also includes supporting consumer model development and performance targets. Additionally, the position involves developing technical skills in consumer understanding, learning core research and analysis techniques, and participating in Corporate & Global R&I activities to drive organizational capability and individual growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Anthropology Consumer/Sensory Science or other related field of study

  • Understanding of the scientific method/mentality to problem solving. Displayed use of the scientific method, leveraging multiple sources of information, to improve a product, experience, process in a past internship or in undergraduate research
  • Previous experience designing, conducting, and analyzing consumer research to uncover and translate consumer beliefs, needs, & desires into critical design features and products.
  • Demonstrated interest in understanding consumer/people thoughts, needs, desire and how that impacts their choices, preferences, etc. This could look like a capstone like project or other work within or outside curriculum

Responsibilities

  • Helping to deliver new & or improved products through in-depth consumer understanding - uncovering & translating consumer beliefs, needs & desires into critical product design features and technologies, experiential cues & claims.
  • Defining targets & acceptable ranges for performance (product & pack) & consumer models that directly link innovation choices to consumer desired benefits & experiences.
  • Working across category on platform & upstream research projects, working with Advanced Technologies, Formulation, Packaging & Processing innovation partners.
  • Being the voice of the consumer to help guide & inform the technology innovation teams on opportunities & implications of technical choices.
  • Uncovering & translating consumer beliefs, needs & desires into critical functional benefits, design features, experiential signals, consumer claims, for upstream unbranded technologies and projects.
  • Determining critical technical attributes & driving innovation distinctiveness.
  • Guiding & informing the technical innovation teams on opportunities & implications of technical choices.
  • Ensuring holistic technical design: products + packaging/device + regimen.
  • Developing technical benefit statements & core claim spaces for technologies.
  • Planning & executing own work, with help from manager, supporting the projects, delivering it reliably, punctually, ensuring quality content & sharing learnings.
  • Building category understanding of ELC products, packages / devices, using technical knowledge to generate & analyze data, recognize & flag unexpected learnings.
  • Becoming competent in standard operating procedures & methodologies used within their department.
  • Supporting in consumer model development, consumer performance targets & specifications.
  • Onboarding and developing technical skills in consumer understanding – learning core consumer research & analysis techniques.
