Associate, Scientist I/II, Cellular Biology

AbbVie•North Chicago, IL
•$58,656 - $110,500

About The Position

AbbVie is seeking a highly engaged scientist to develop and enhance skills in cell culture and complex in vitro model development. The position is part of the Investigative Toxicology and Pathology group and serves as a key interface with internal stakeholders across Discovery, Development Sciences, and Preclinical Toxicology. Applying scientific and organizational skills along with cell culture and molecular biology techniques, the successful candidate will contribute to risk assessment for novel therapeutics in the early development pipeline. The scientist will support the development and conduct of cell culture-based in vitro studies; develop, use, and build simple and complex in vitro models, including spheroids and organoids; and run assays and imaging endpoints to screen compounds and evaluate mechanisms driving toxicity. The role requires producing reliable, reproducible data promptly, exercising experimental precision and strong data interpretation, and communicating effectively in a diverse, cross-functional environment.

Requirements

  • For Associate I: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in biology or a related field, and 3–5 years of experience.
  • For Associate II: Master’s degree or equivalent education in biology or a related field; no experience required.
  • At least one year of hands-on experience in cell culture and in vitro model development and/or maintenance.
  • Ability to work and contribute within a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to learn quickly and generate and analyze data with little supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism for data analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • A proven record of collaborative work resulting in scientific contributions to the scientific community.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with cellular biology.
  • Experience with microscopy, ELISA, and protein quantification.

  • Develop, utilize, and build simple and complex in vitro models, including spheroids and organoids, across diverse cell and tissue types.
  • Run western blot, ELISA, cell viability assessments, and immunofluorescent imaging to screen compounds and evaluate mechanisms driving toxicity.
  • Independently generate reliable and reproducible data in a timely manner, demonstrating experimental precision and strong data interpretation skills.
  • Communicate effectively in a diverse, cross-functional environment.

Benefits

  • Paid time off, including vacation, holidays, and sick time.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for eligible employees.
