About The Position

Baylor University, a preeminent Christian research university, is seeking an Associate Research Scientist in Microbial Omics to join The Wright Group in the Department of Biology. This role involves participating in project leadership, developing independent research, and contributing to lab management. The Wright Group focuses on phenotype-driven studies of gut and oral microbiomes, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach involving microbiome sciences, chemical biology, and mass spectrometry-based omics. The successful candidate will engage in cutting-edge research in microbial/microbiome proteomics and/or metabolomics, including metabolomics and DDA/DIA metaproteomics, method development, and data analysis. This position offers a dynamic research setting with over 30 interdisciplinary researchers and opportunities to seek extramural funding.

Requirements

  • A Ph.D. and one year of relevant work experience are required.
  • Ph.D. should be in a discipline relevant to the position.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Nice To Haves

  • A Ph.D. and three years relevant work experience are preferred.
  • Experience in an academic or similar lab setting, preferably in chemical biology, proteomics, and/or microbiology.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols, chemical hygiene plans, and lab instrumentation.
  • Student mentoring experience.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the leadership of projects within the group.
  • Develop their own research projects and seek extramural funding as PI, co-PI, or co-I.
  • Play a vital role in ensuring efficient and successful outcomes in the Wright Group by taking on select lab management duties.
  • Engage in metabolomics and DDA and/or DIA metaproteomics in the group, facilitating method development and deployment and data analysis.
  • Facilitate ongoing projects in the Wright Lab.
  • Help develop new research proposals.
  • Provide day-to-day management of operations of the scientific laboratory.
  • Manage the inventory of lab chemicals and supplies.
  • Maintain equipment.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed.
  • Maintain compliance with Baylor research expectations.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors.
  • Help supervise undergraduate and graduate researchers.
  • Provide training in lab techniques and lab safety.
  • Work with the group Research Coordinator to onboard new researchers.
  • Participate in the mentorship of postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
  • Participate in existing collaborations and develop new internal and external collaborations for the Wright Group.
  • Write proposals for extramural funding as Co-I, Co-PI, or PI.
  • Provide training to Wright Group researchers.
  • Assure safe laboratory operations and assure all researchers are compliant with Baylor EH&S.
  • Maintain laboratory instrumentation and serve as a liaison for repairs, service, and new installations.
  • Work with the Wright Group Research Coordinator to assure the lab maintains necessary items.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor’s mission.
  • Comply with university policies.
