About The Position

The UNIVERSITY OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA DAVID A. CLARKE SCHOOL OF LAW invites applications from aspiring faculty and junior lateral candidates interested in directing our Community Development Law Clinic. Students in the Community Development Law Clinic learn transactional and business lawyering skills while representing non-profit organizations and small, urban entrepreneurs. The Clinic often works in concert with community-based business centers and other professionals to provide clients with comprehensive professional consulting services. Clinic students provide clients with a wide range of direct legal services to help them establish and operate their businesses and programs. Candidates must hold a J.D. degree with a record of strong academic performance and excellent potential for scholarly achievement. Relevant experience and demonstrated potential for outstanding clinical teaching are expected. The position's rank will depend on the successful applicant’s level of experience. The start date for the position is January 4, 2027.

Requirements

  • An earned Juris Doctor degree.
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the District of Columbia or other state.
  • Demonstrated teaching excellence and a record of scholarship.
  • Demonstrated professional competence in the relevant field, demonstrated professional attainment, and the potential for continued professional growth.
  • At least three years of full-time teaching experience at an accredited law school.
  • Expertise in the substantive area of law relevant to the clinic and the delivery of high-quality legal services.
  • Commitment to access to justice, community engagement, and serving historically underserved populations.

Responsibilities

  • Directing the Community Development Law Clinic.
  • Supervising and mentoring law students in the competent and ethical representation of clients.
  • Teaching experiential courses that integrate legal doctrine, professional skills, ethics, and reflective practice.
  • Providing timely, constructive feedback and assessing student performance using clear learning outcomes.
