The Associate Nurse Manager (ANM), Inpatient plans, oversees, and directs patient care, ensuring standards of quality, service, and safety are met within the philosophy and objectives of the University of Miami Hospitals and Clinics. The ANM acts as the day-to-day supervisor, directly overseeing the healthcare team to ensure safe and effective clinical operations and outcomes. They assist management with strategic operations of the unit, conduct staff meetings, and fulfill other responsibilities. With management oversight, the ANM leads and/or provides input for performance improvement processes. The role involves analyzing, organizing, and prioritizing work accurately while meeting deadlines, and overseeing daily operations of the nursing unit and personnel. Direct patient care may be provided as needed, with 24/7 responsibility assumed when necessary. The ANM collaborates with Nurse Leaders on short- and long-term goals aligned with organizational priorities, consistently monitoring and overseeing nursing care and documentation to ensure Standards of Practice are followed. They are responsible for reporting issues or concerns appropriately and timely, keeping leadership informed of unusual patient or staff occurrences, changes in staffing requirements or patient acuity, and potential risk-related incidents. The ANM assists in developing roles and responsibilities of direct reports by fostering talent management and development within their specialty area. They work with leaders to identify, develop, and retain high-potential employees through delegation, stretch assignments, supervision, and educational programs. Encouraging nursing staff to advance through the Professional Development program, monitoring productivity, flexing appropriately, and meeting or exceeding financial targets are key aspects of the role. Improving employee engagement through collaboration, holding staff accountable, conducting one-on-one meetings, and acknowledging team members for great performance are also important. The ANM participates in and initiates the corrective action process when necessary, ensuring policies are fairly and consistently followed and enforced. They demonstrate active support of the hospital's Process Improvement (PI) philosophies and align departmental goals with PI initiatives. Working closely with leaders, the ANM develops quality improvement/PI processes to ensure safe, quality patient outcomes, implements Evidence-Based Best Practices, and is actively involved in at least one policy or process improvement committee. The role includes consistently rounding on patients, monitoring bedside handoff, and assuring staff responsiveness to call lights. Establishing and continuously assessing the effectiveness of internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures, and ensuring employees are trained on controls and University policy and procedures are also responsibilities.
