About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform examinations of human bodies in order to determine the cause and manner of death, including determining jurisdiction, performing autopsies, and reviewing laboratory work and investigative reports. This is an unclassified position within the Medical Examiner Department and requires a Georgia Medical License.

Requirements

  • Doctorate Degree in Medicine required.
  • Three years of professional medical experience, including completion of an anatomic pathology residency in an accredited program.
  • Current enrollment in, or completion of, a forensic pathology fellowship in an accredited program.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Medical License.
  • Must be eligible or have a certification in Anatomic and Forensic Pathology from the American Board of Pathology at the time of, or within two years of employment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions.
  • Must learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.
  • If selected, an official, accredited college transcript is required, at time of employment, for all degrees/course work used to qualify for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers.
  • Performs post-mortem examinations, including autopsies and external examinations.
  • Interprets x-rays and correlates wound pathways and trajectories.
  • Orders and interprets laboratory tests and reports.
  • Determines jurisdiction and approach to cases by reviewing investigative reports, photographs, and other evidence.
  • Certifies deaths by reviewing autopsy and laboratory findings, determining cause and manner of death, and completing death certificates.
  • Provides follow-up consultation and court testimony regarding findings.
  • Teaches and trains pathology residents, forensic pathology fellows, and medical students.
  • Participates in in-house inspections and quality assurance activities.
  • Presents data to committees and serves on the Child Fatality Review committee.
  • Conducts or participates in research projects.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations.
  • Operates and maintains various instruments and equipment, including scalpels, scissors, forceps, microscopes, and dictaphones.
  • Operates a personal computer for data entry, retrieval, review, and modification.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other employees, students, attorneys, court personnel, the public, and other individuals as needed.
