About The Position

The Manufacturing Engineering Operations team builds and supports the automation, test, and assembly processes behind Matterport's devices and product lines. This role is an eight-week, in-person internship focused on automation, test fixture design, or performance analysis for hardware development, requiring a blend of mechanical engineering skills with software and electrical instincts. Interns will be comfortable working with PCBs, assembling electromechanical devices, sensors, and analyzing hardware data. The work will be challenging but scoped to the intern's level, with guidance from experienced engineers, dedicated mentors, and an open, cross-functional culture.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited, not-for-profit university or college in Mechanical Engineering or a comparable major.
  • Must have an expected graduation date of December 2026 - June 2027.
  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
  • At least 2 months of previous relevant internship or co-op experience.
  • Proficiency with a CAD package (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar).
  • Hands-on aptitude: comfortable prototyping, wiring, assembling, and troubleshooting hardware.
  • Comfort extracting and analyzing data with Python, MATLAB, or Excel, plus clear written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to discuss prior internship, project, or academic work, including the problem solved, technical approach, collaboration, and outcomes.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of mechatronics fundamentals: sensors, actuators, motor control, and basic electronics.
  • Experience with microcontrollers or embedded platforms (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar).
  • Exposure to a manufacturing, production, or lab environment.
  • Coursework or projects in mechanical design, robotics, automation, sensors, or precision motion systems.
  • Interest in learning new technologies and building high-quality hardware.
  • Demonstrated initiative and collaboration through academic, internship, extracurricular, or team-based experiences.
  • Familiarity with Agile development practices.
  • Exposure to AI, frameworks, or other technical tools through coursework, projects, internships, or personal learning.

Responsibilities

  • Own one hardware project end to end, from concept through build and validation, and present it at the close of the internship.
  • Design and assemble electromechanical hardware, working across all hardware sub-systems.
  • Extract performance data from hardware systems and process it into useful, actionable results.
  • Apply both mechanical and software/electrical engineering skills to solve real manufacturing or design problems.
  • Work cross-functionally with experienced engineers and mentors, learning our processes, procedures, and product lines along the way.
