About The Position
The Associate Manufacturing role supports execution of cell culture, harvest, and purification process studies at the 500L scale in the Amgen Rhode Island AR6 Pilot Plant. The work includes operating single-use bioreactors, centrifugation equipment, chromatography skids, and filtration systems. The Pilot Plant provides technical support for team supply, commercial process development, technology transfer, process characterization, and scale-up/scale-down activities. This is a day-shift position that includes off-shift and weekend coverage. The role also supports operational decision-making, troubleshooting, and investigative work.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree; or an associate degree plus 6 months of biotechnology experience in manufacturing, engineering, or process development; or a high school diploma/GED plus 2 years of biotechnology experience in manufacturing, engineering, or process development.

- An established record of encouraging safety in a laboratory or manufacturing setting.
- Experience performing bioprocess unit operations in cell culture and/or purification.
- Knowledge of troubleshooting process equipment issues, including automation control strategies and utilities such as clean-in-place and clean steam.
- Experience operating control systems such as Delta V and developing methods on Cytiva purification systems using Unicorn.
- Experience with data analysis and interpretation.
- Experience collaborating across functional areas and sites.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and strong computer skills.
- Experience leading Operational Excellence efforts to drive efficiency and safety.
Responsibilities
- Aseptically maintain mammalian cell culture from vial thaw and flask passaging through bioreactor operations and harvest, including centrifugation, multistage clarification, and/or ATF filtration.
- Perform protein purification using multistage chromatography and filtration systems, including ion-exchange chromatography, affinity chromatography, and tangential flow filtration.
- Set up and operate bioreactors and vessels, centrifugation and filtration harvest equipment, and downstream equipment such as chromatography and UF/DF skids.
- Perform bench-work studies such as titration and filtration.
- Perform in-process sampling and monitoring.
- Analyze in-process samples and perform routine analytical equipment maintenance.
- Batch and filter media and buffers.
- Support new product introductions, technology transfer, and equipment or experiment design.
- Document experimental data in electronic lab notebooks in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices.
- Maintain general laboratory organization and cleanliness.
- Manage inventory and support operational excellence initiatives and preventative maintenance for systems and equipment.
- Inform operational decision-making and contribute to troubleshooting and investigative work.
