For more information, visit equalitynow.org The Associate Manager, Media plays a strategic role within Equality Now’s global Communications Team, leading high-impact media execution that advances the organisation’s advocacy priorities and strengthens its public voice worldwide. Working across regions in a remote, highly collaborative environment, this role is responsible for driving global media visibility, safeguarding narrative integrity, and positioning Equality Now and its experts as authoritative leaders on gender equality and human rights. The role combines advanced media strategy execution, editorial leadership, and journalist relationship management to seize timely opportunities tied to campaigns, strategic litigation, research launches, and global moments. Through expert crafting and placement of media content, this position transforms complex legal and policy issues into compelling, accessible communications that catalyse public engagement and influence decision-makers.

Requirements

  • Understanding of international media landscapes, news cycles, and regional sensitivities.
  • Strong news judgement and ability to identify what makes a story relevant, timely, and newsworthy across global markets.
  • Adept at extracting key messages from reports, strategic litigation, legal decisions, and other complex materials.
  • Understanding of reputational and safeguarding risks involved in rights-based advocacy across countries and regions.
  • Knowledge of social media for amplifying news and content.
  • Fluent written and spoken English; fluency in Arabic, Russian, or other languages is highly desirable.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop, refine, and distill complex concepts into clear messaging, speaker briefings, and program or event-related content.
  • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills, with a proven ability to foster collaboration and cultivate trust-based relationships aligned with Equality Now’s mission and values.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage organisational leadership, high-profile individuals, speakers, supporters, donors, and local partners with poise, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Exceptional copywriting, sub-editing, and storytelling skills, with a demonstrable record of producing high-quality press and editorial content.
  • Comfortable working independently as a proactive self-starter within a remote, global team environment.
  • Strong workload, workflow, and time-management skills, with the ability to perform under pressure, meet tight deadlines, balance competing priorities, and respond flexibly to breaking developments.
  • Proven experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder approval processes in large or matrixed organisations.
  • Demonstrated ability to pitch and place stories persuasively in national and international media; strategic, persistent, and proactive in media outreach and content placement.
  • Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic, and relationship-management skills, with a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively across time zones with global staff, partners, and vendors.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally on occasion, and to work evenings and weekends as required by events and media moments.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • 6+ years of professional experience in media and communications, with at least half of that time spent working within the media or communications team of an NGO or similar organisation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide editorial oversight of external-facing media content produced by colleagues to guarantee quality, risk sensitivity, and factual correctness.

  • Support and mentor Communications Officers in the planning and coordination of media moments, ensuring clear production timelines, sign-off processes, and adherence to organisational standards.
  • Act as a focal point for media management across multiple regions, ensuring consistent and coordinated responses.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to identify, develop, and capitalise on media opportunities and external moments to amplify Equality Now’s media coverage, visibility, and impact.
  • Provide media training to Equality Now staff and external partners; develop and update high-quality training materials and toolkits that reflect best practice and gender sensitivity.
  • Provide actionable feedback and guiding improvements to structure, tone, and narrative flow. This includes reorganising and shaping content for impact, tightening arguments, enhancing transitions, and refining overall story arcs. Refine sentences for precision, readability, and narrative cohesion, and identify and amend errors and inconsistencies.
  • Provide targeted support to colleagues in strengthening their pitch copy by reviewing drafts, refining key messages, advising on framing and news angles, and ensuring pitches are clear, persuasive, tailored to specific outlets, and aligned with priorities.
  • Support with monitoring, evaluating, and reporting internally on Equality Now media coverage and the impact of that coverage. Produce reports on media performance and insights using analytics tools, including Meltwater and Muck Rack.
  • Write, edit, and sub-edit a wide range of media content, including press releases, op-eds, media briefings, case studies, Q&As, and blog posts.
  • Ensure their own and colleagues’ media output is factually accurate, well-structured, well-written, fully optimised for SEO and geo-targeting, and consistent with Equality Now’s brand, tone of voice, house style, messaging, and values.
  • Write persuasively to craft arguments, produce engaging evidence-based storytelling, and emotionally compelling narratives suited for advocacy work. Distil complex research, policy, and legal material into clear, accessible, and media-friendly language.
  • Frame stories thoughtfully to resonate with specific audiences, cultural contexts, and media markets. Adapt tone, format, and style for a variety of outlets and audiences. Ensure media content does not inadvertently reinforce stereotypes or cause harm.
  • Maintain the highest editorial standards in media copy by applying grammar, syntax, and punctuation mastery. Edit copy to reduce word count.

  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with journalists, editors, and producers at media outlets around the world.
  • Map and segment media contacts by issue, geography, and outlet type; maintain and update media databases. Identify potential contacts and opportunities in traditional and non-traditional media.
  • Produce persuasive pitch materials and proactively place stories, interviews, and op-eds in target international outlets. Tailor pitches to specific audiences, outlets, and news agendas to maximise pick up, impact, media cut through, and audience reach.
  • Ensure timely and relevant responses to media requests, coordinate with subject matter experts, regional teams, and media contacts; arrange media interviews, including scheduling, preparing briefings, supporting spokespeople with media preparation and follow-up, and preparing or sub-editing quotes.
  • Identity and flag media highlights. Work with communications officers and the digital team to amplify Equality Now media coverage on social media.
