About The Position

The Associate is a key member of the investment and asset management team, working directly on deals from origination through execution and asset management. The Associate role assists in conducting due diligence of potential infrastructure and renewable resources investment opportunities; preparing and presenting materials to investment committees; and monitoring existing investments. This individual will have a strong understanding of private markets / infrastructure investing and corporate finance principles, contributing significantly to the department's investment activities. The Associate role also supports co-investor and LP relationship management, including coordination with co-sponsors on jointly held assets and communication with external partners. Above all else, the Associate brings a long-term value investing mindset with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate university degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, or related field
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ experience within a leading private equity / asset management firm, investment bank, advisory/consultancy firm, corporate development team, or direct exposure to private market investments
  • Advanced financial modeling capabilities with proven ability to build, manage, and maintain complex, dynamic models
  • Strong understanding of private markets / infrastructure investing and a sound understanding of corporate finance principles
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: i.e., a proven ability to build lasting trust-based relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation communication skills with ability to distill complex information into concise messaging
  • Expert-level Excel and PowerPoint skills
  • Experience with data rooms, process management tools, and financial databases (Capital IQ, Bloomberg)
  • Understanding of project finance, corporate finance, and infrastructure debt markets

Nice To Haves

  • Previous infrastructure investment experience, with an emphasis on the energy sector (midstream/power and utilities), and/or Transportation including Public-Private Partnerships
  • International education and/or experience
  • Familiarity with ESG/responsible investment frameworks and their application to infrastructure asset evaluation and portfolio monitoring
  • Professional designation completed or in progress (CFA, CBV, CPA, LLB, or MBA) is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Conducts general industry, company, and fund research
  • Identifies emerging investment themes in Infrastructure
  • Assists in analyzing identified direct or fund investment opportunities
  • Proactively supports the building of deal flow by cultivating relationships with sponsors, advisors, bankers, and other intermediaries to source proprietary and off-market investment opportunities
  • Leads financial modeling and valuation analysis for investment opportunities
  • Assists due diligence workstreams including technical, commercial, and regulatory analysis
  • Prepares internal investment committee approval materials (e.g. Investment Memorandum and other deal-related materials)
  • Reviews transaction documents including SPAs, SHAs, and financing agreements in coordination with deal leads, internal legal counsel, and external advisors
  • Manages co-investor and co-sponsor coordination during execution, including review of co-investor materials and co-ordinating diligence requests
  • Presents investment recommendations to BCI's Investment Committee
  • Assists in the monitoring of existing investments
  • Supports active portfolio improvement initiatives, including identifying and executing value creation opportunities, operational enhancements, and strategic initiatives at portfolio companies
  • Oversees the end-of-the-year valuation of direct and indirect investments
  • Supports the review of annual budgets and prepare supporting analysis
  • Supports BCI’s governance role at portfolio companies, including review of board and committee materials and participation in committee-level discussions where applicable
  • Assists in preparation of long-term portfolio strategies
  • Provides guidance and mentorship to junior team members (Analysts), including review of their financial analysis and supporting their professional development
  • Travels when required, for due diligence or asset management
