About The Position

Boston College seeks an attorney experienced in a broad range of real estate and transactional practice areas for the position of Associate General Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel. The attorney will report to the General Counsel and will advise the University on a variety of matters, with a focus on campus planning and facilities development, including zoning and permitting, institutional master planning, real estate transactions and disputes, property tax, and design and construction contracts. The practice also includes regulatory compliance in areas such as accessibility, sustainability, wetlands protection, state and local historic preservation, hazardous waste, environmental health and safety, and tax-exempt status. Within a small general counsel’s office, the attorney will handle other transactional matters as assigned.

Requirements

  • Eight to ten years of experience practicing real estate law
  • Demonstrated experience navigating complex land development issues and zoning regulations and handling a wide range of transactional matters
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, analytical, and counselling skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate well with a broad range of clients
  • Ability to balance multiple and competing deadlines
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to integrate practice with the complexities and priorities of a complex university
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
  • Admission to the Massachusetts bar or ability to be admitted within one (1) year

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the City of Boston and/or the City of Newton or other Massachusetts municipalities is strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Representing the University before state and local government boards and officials
  • Negotiating, drafting and reviewing real estate contracts
  • Advising internal clients about zoning, permitting, and tax considerations
  • Serving as lead counsel to Boston College’s Facilities Management department
  • Reviewing and negotiating design and construction contracts
  • Handling other matters as assigned
