About The Position

This temporary, part-time (0.10 FTE) position in the Library's Acquisition and Resource Management Department focuses on archival preservation practices within Special Collections and Archives. The role involves evaluating materials for housing, stabilization, and treatment, purchasing or creating specialized housing, and managing supplies. A key responsibility is updating collection information in the library management system. The position also includes copy cataloging and metadata creation for special collection materials. Collaboration with various stakeholders, including LITS colleagues and peers at Carleton College, is essential. The role also involves promoting library services, contributing to events, and fostering an inclusive community. The Associate will also complete required training and performance management cycles, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in library- or conservation- specific environments.
  • Previous work, volunteer, student, or intern experience in preservation environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree and library- or conservation- specific training/workshops in box-making, and simple preservation methods.
  • 2+ years demonstrated success working in a preservation environment.

Responsibilities

  • Apply knowledge and experience of archival preservation practices to daily operations in Special Collections and Archives.
  • Evaluate materials for housing or rehousing, stabilization, or treatment, and routing to conservation.
  • Purchase or create specialized housing for materials in special collections and archives.
  • Monitor and order end processing supplies.
  • Update holdings and condition status of serials in the Nordic-American Imprint collections in the library management system (Alma) or archival management system (Collective Access) as appropriate.
  • Completes copy cataloging/metadata creation for special collection materials.
  • Collaborate with Library, Information Technology, campus, and Bridge stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with LITS colleagues to provide exemplary services.
  • Work collaboratively and in tandem with peers at Carleton College to ensure that work is not duplicated and that costs are contained or reduced.
  • Promote services and represent the libraries and IT, including creating media, planning & working at events, contributing ideas, and helping the Events & Engagement Committee to make the libraries a welcoming place.
  • Support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community.
  • Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle.
  • Other duties as assigned.
