About The Position

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is seeking a motivated Associate Fellow or Fellow for its Economics Program and Scholl Chair in International Business. This role will focus on research related to international economic issues and their impact on U.S. competitiveness and economic security, including trade policy, supply chain resilience, investment policy, international finance, competition policy, economic governance, and the reimagining of multilateral economic institutions. The Scholl Chair, established in 1981, examines the relationship between international trade and investment and economic growth, innovation, and development. The selected candidate will conduct independent research, author reports, and deliver presentations to inform policy debates and stakeholders. Ideal candidates will have research and policy development experience in international economics with a strong interest in U.S. economic security and geopolitics.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field is required.
  • At least 3-5 years of professional experience in international or public policy development, a technical role, or in any other related field is required.
  • Superior writing, editing, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to interact with and respond to questions from a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, and dispositions from across a wide spectrum of views on foreign policy and national security.
  • Candidate should possess sound judgment, an entrepreneurial attitude, and a creative outlook.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong grasp of the economic statecraft that underpins U.S. trade policy. Work experience in this area is a plus.
  • Experience in executing a research agenda – publishing in national and international media and in academic journals is a plus.
  • Experience working in industry, government, corporate strategy, or comparable sector.
  • Substantive network in and connectivity to U.S. policy officials (U.S. agencies, executive branch, congressional members/staff) and influencers in the international affairs community is a plus.
  • Self-starter with proven project management experience and ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and develop policy analysis to advance the Program’s research agenda.
  • Write and publish reports, commentaries, articles, op-eds, and qualitative policy analysis to promote research findings and objectives.
  • Synthesize large amounts of information, perform quantitative data analysis, and report results to diverse audiences.
  • Contribute to the intellectual vitality of the Program by serving as a recognized expert in the field of international economic policy.
  • Serve as an influential voice on a specific area of international economic policy, promoting the Program’s expert analysis with a diverse set of stakeholders, thought leaders, government executives, policymakers, journalists, and the general public.
  • Represent CSIS as an expert at conferences, workshops, and other public speaking engagements, and donor and prospective donor engagements.
  • Conceive and lead events, such as working groups, panels, and roundtables to advance the program’s research and analysis.
  • Identify potential grant projects, research potential funders, and work with the Program Director in developing robust research proposals in line with the program’s priorities and research agenda.
  • Cultivate and grow an excellent professional network and liaise productively with other organizations.
  • Contribute to the thought leadership and strategic direction of the program.
  • Work with and mentor research assistants and associates to produce research and facilitate their professional development.
