About The Position

Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric Transmission (ET) System Protection Engineering department is seeking a motivated Electrical Engineer to support the Company’s evolving distribution grid. The primary responsibilities for this role include the design, modeling, and development of protective relay settings for Distribution, and renewable energy interconnections. This is an exciting time to join our team as we are involved in industry-leading projects and initiatives like interconnecting 5000 MW of solar generation in the next 5 years, the first utility-owned offshore wind project in United States federal waters off the Atlantic coast, STATCOMS, IEC-61850, and the largest data center load growth in the world. We offer a hybrid 3-2 work schedule (three days in the office, two days of teleworking) to accommodate the need for flexibility. Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined below will be considered for this opportunity. Requirements

  • Associate Engineer: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience).
  • Engineer: 2+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)
  • Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)
  • Staff Engineer: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Equally effective with working independently or in a team environment.
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
  • Understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems.
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with short circuit modeling software preferred.
  • Understanding of IEC 61850 communication protocol for intelligent substation protection is a plus.
  • Experience with SAP work management systems is a plus.
  • Programming skills for automation of system studies (e.g., Python, .NET, C#, etc.) is a plus.
  • Understanding of the principles of transmission and/or distribution relay protection a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply basic protection philosophy and applications to real-world scenarios.
  • Develop protective relay settings for System Protection Engineering (SPE) Distribution protection schemes inside the substation.
  • Under the guidance of experienced team members, provide technical assistance to various engineering and field teams to fully develop the protection and control design package.
  • Provide technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects.
  • Continue to learn and apply protection philosophy and application to real-world scenarios.
  • Participate in various company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance ET's system protection performance.
  • Participate in trade and industry organizations.
  • Support team with settings peer review activities.
  • Continue to learn and provide newer engineers on the team with guidance on applying protection philosophy and application to real-world scenarios.
  • Provide advanced technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects.
  • Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.
  • Provide technical support to newer engineers on the team.
  • Provide support to SPE's Engineer Training program.
  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
