About The Position

San Francisco Public Works Bureau of Engineering is seeking two (2) Associate Civil Engineers for the Structural Engineering Section for several different projects. Specifically, these roles will be responsible for a variety of engineering projects, including design of new buildings and alterations of existing buildings; seismic evaluations; design and repair of roadway structures (bridges, stairways, retaining walls, tunnels, etc.); and design and repair of miscellaneous structures such as vaults, tanks, piers, wharves, etc. Under general direction, these roles perform professional civil/structural engineering work in the field and office, supervises the work of related staff engaged in engineering work and may act as the project engineer on engineering projects.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of verifiable professional civil engineering experience of which two (2) years of professional civil experience equivalent to the City & County of San Francisco Class 5203 Assistant Engineer or higher
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Civil Engineering

  • Design phase for the 4th Street Bridge Corrosion Repair project has already started in early 2026.
  • The anticipated duration of these projects will be up to three (3) years.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares engineering designs, contract drawings and technical specifications to ensure compliance with codes, standards and project requirements
  • Prepares cost and quantity construction estimates and structural calculations for necessary labor, materials and equipment associated with construction, contractors, suppliers, reconstruction, installation, repair, restoration and maintenance
  • Provides engineering support for construction and operations; reviews existing conditions and establishes suitability for use; conducts studies of processes by identifying, obtaining and analyzing samples and data; reviews deliverable submittal and RFIs
  • Performs and coordinates field work activities and field investigation; responds to earthquakes, landslides, and other structural emergencies; analyzes and resolves problems to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, standards, specifications and performance
  • Develops analytical structural models using ETABS, SAP2000, and other related software
  • Supervises the preparation of detailed construction drawings, technical specifications and structural calculations; assigns and reviews the work of assigned staff and consultants; determines resources necessary to complete assigned work
  • Reviews engineering drawings, specifications, calculations and work products produced by staff, consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy, adequacy and conformance to standards. Verifies quantity, dimensions, safety requirements, and proper test and start-up procedures
  • Prepares and supervises the preparation of a wide variety of technical engineering reports, field reports, regulatory reports, standard operating procedures manuals, emergency operations plans, minutes, public correspondence and other documentation
  • Directs, trains, monitors, evaluates and counsels work activities of other engineering related staff (e.g., drafters) in accordance with appropriate MOUs, Civil Service Commission Rules, and departmental procedures
  • Conducts meetings and public hearings; makes presentations to staff, committees boards, commissions, approval agencies and the general public
  • May drive a city vehicle to and from job sites
