About The Position

The Worldwide Commercialization Learning (WWCL) Centre of Excellence is seeking an experienced learning leader to serve as Associate Director, WW Medical Skills. This role is the single point of accountability within the WWCL CoE for the functional and behavioral skills learning strategy across the full Medical Organization, field and home office. This includes the functional skills, coaching capability, and ways of working that sit alongside, and are built on top of, deep therapy area and disease knowledge. Where the Director, Medical Science, Disease & Product (MSDP) owns scientific and disease knowledge content for Medical learners, this role owns how Medical colleagues are equipped to apply that knowledge: field colleagues engaging credibly with Healthcare Professionals (HCPs) and coaching teams to essential BMS competencies, and home office colleagues (e.g., Medical Affairs, Medical Lead, Medical Science Liaison leadership) building the functional and cross-functional skills needed to operate effectively within the New Commercialization Model and beyond. Within the WWCL operating model the role acts as Learning Partner Lead for the Medical skills portfolio, spanning field and home office, with no direct line management responsibility but access to an allocated pool of Senior Managers within the CoE.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
  • 8-10+ years of experience in learning, field medical, medical affairs, or capability development, ideally within life sciences
  • Skills development, field medical, Medical Affairs, or home office Medical training experience highly preferred
  • Demonstrated experience designing and executing learning strategy for Medical capability programs, spanning field and home office populations (with global scope preferred)
  • Strong understanding of the Medical environment across field and home office, including HCP engagement, field coaching models, and home office Medical ways of working (e.g., Medical Affairs, Medical Lead)
  • Intermediate to expert training experience, including training needs analysis, adult learning principles, learning design, development, execution, and evaluation
  • Proven strategic thought partner, able to see the end-to-end system, co-create with senior stakeholders, and bring structure to ambiguous problems
  • Exceptional influencing and consulting skills; able to operate credibly at senior levels in complex, matrixed global environments
  • Experience with global delivery partners (e.g., LEAP/GCC or equivalent) and multi-partner delivery ecosystems
  • Proven ability to drive delivery accountability and high performance through others without direct line management authority
  • Demonstrated strategic, forward-thinking, agile, enterprise mindset and comfortable navigating ambiguity
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and other applications
  • Ability to travel for multiple meeting engagements (e.g., Managers Meetings, National Plan of Action Meetings, various Training Initiatives)

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end functional and behavioral skills learning strategy for Medical teams across field and home office, translating Medical priorities into a coherent, phased, and measurable learning roadmap
  • Set the strategy for annual Medical training needs assessments across field and home office populations, combining qualitative and quantitative research with input from WW Medical Learning, Global Field Medical Excellence, and Home Office Medical/Medical Affairs leadership to define functional skills gaps
  • Define how Medical skills programs build on, and stay distinct from, MSDP's therapy area and disease knowledge content, maintaining clear accountability boundaries between the two
  • Serve as the CoE's primary learning partner to WW Medical Learning, Global Field Medical Excellence, and Home Office Medical/Medical Affairs leadership for Medical capability priorities
  • Ensure the Medical skills strategy remains coherent as both field-facing and home office-facing programs evolve, including alignment with relevant enterprise initiatives such as Rewire the Field where they touch Medical populations
  • Independently monitor external and industry trends affecting the Medical function (e.g., HCP engagement models, field medical and Medical Affairs practice, coaching methodology, and relevant regulatory or compliance developments), proactively incorporating relevant insights into strategy recommendations brought to the Senior Director, WW Medical Learning, and Home Office Medical/Medical Affairs leadership
  • Translate Medical needs into role-based skills frameworks and learning pathways spanning field roles (e.g., HCP engagement, coaching to BMS competencies, adoption of new customer engagement and commercialization models) and home office roles (e.g., Medical Lead, Medical Science Liaison management, Medical Affairs cross-functional capability)
  • Own the design intent and prioritized roadmap for Medical curriculum pathways across field and home office, working closely with the pooled Senior Manager team to develop and execute a solution deployment roadmap
  • Ensure frameworks are globally consistent and appropriately flexible for therapy area, market, and Medical learner nuances
  • Provide strategic direction to Senior Managers drawn from the CoE agile pool, ensuring clarity of brief, quality standards, and delivery accountability for Medical skills work across field and home office
  • Oversee the design and development of skills-based learning solutions, ensuring solutions are high-impact, incorporate adult learning principles, and include sustainability plans to reinforce desired skills and behaviors
  • Critically assess existing skills-based training programs for Medical field roles (e.g., a:coach, MEDsights, Medical Insights Training, Medical On Call, Customer Engagement Model Training, New Commercialization Model Training) and employ a continuous improvement mindset to ensure programs remain current and relevant
  • Critically assess existing skills-based training programs for Home Office Medical roles (e.g., Medical Lead onboarding, Medical Affairs cross-functional ways of working, Medical Science Liaison management capability, 3M skills framework) and employ a continuous improvement mindset to ensure programs remain current and relevant
  • Develop measurement strategies, using the Kirkpatrick Evaluation Model or equivalent, to accurately assess the acquisition of new knowledge, skills, and behavior change
  • Oversee train-the-trainer (TTT) strategies to ensure WW Medical Learning, Global Field Medical Excellence, and Home Office Medical/Medical Affairs teams are upskilled in training content and well-prepared to deploy to Medical roles, including onboarding
  • Maintain a forward-looking view of the active demand pipeline for Medical skills across field and home office, reporting to the Senior Director and contributing to CoE portfolio governance forums
  • Exercise autonomy to identify and implement process and delivery improvements within the Medical skills portfolio (e.g., needs assessment methodology, learning design approach, measurement approach, LEAP delivery routing), escalating to the Senior Director only where changes have cross-portfolio, enterprise, or resourcing implications
  • Serve as Learning Partner Lead for the Medical skills portfolio, field and home office, owning portfolio-level demand, prioritization, and routing to LEAP
  • Provide requirements, SME coordination, review cycles, and delivery readiness for LEAP-delivered work
  • Ensure Senior Managers provide LEAP with clear requirements, SME nominations, review cycles, and delivery readiness confirmations in line with LEAP governance standards
  • Escalate enterprise-impacting trade-offs and manage delivery risks, with structured context and recommended options, to the Senior Director
