About The Position

This role is responsible for maintaining alignment with corporate process safety goals, supporting personnel with process safety requirements, and driving resolution of high-risk issues with urgency and integrity. The Associate Director champions and promotes a strong process safety culture, prepares and delivers presentations, and tracks process safety indicators. They identify improvement opportunities, recommend new tools and work processes, and ensure process safety deliverables are integrated into project execution and management of change. The role also involves ensuring adequate Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment procedures are in place, leading incident investigations and Root Cause Analyses, and participating in Pre-Startup Safety Reviews and Management of Change procedures. The Associate Director manages the LG&E PSM/RMP Assessment program and ensures process safety training is developed and maintained.

Requirements

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrates an understanding of: Risk-Based Process Safety, PHA requirements and methodologies, Facility Siting and Human Factors, Process Safety Information (PSI) and its maintenance, Relief systems life cycle, Critical Safety Systems (CSS), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), Safety Integrity Levels (SIL), Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and their application to LG&E's business, Management of Change (MOC) and its potential impact, Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR) and their conduct, Operating Procedures required in process operations, Mechanical Integrity program elements and its support to process safety.
Good overall knowledge of OSHA's Process Safety Management (PSM) regulation.
Knowledge of various Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) related to process safety.
Knowledge of EPA's Risk Management Program (RMP).
Understanding of how dispersion, fire and explosion modeling is used.
Ability and willingness to analyze and understand process safety incidents within industry to identify opportunities for improvement.
Ability and willingness to drive accountability at all organizational levels for process safety performance and risk reduction.
Ability and willingness to stay up to date with local, state and federal regulations that apply to facilities.
Ability and willingness to promote a strong process safety culture where attitudes and behaviors support the goal of safer process operations.
Ability and willingness to lead and participate in cross-functional teams.
Ability and willingness to manage multiple priorities, drive issues to completion, and obtain results.
Ability and willingness to build and maintain productive relationships across departmental lines in a matrix organization.
Bachelor's Degree (preferably from an ABET-accredited science, engineering, or technology program). Comparable experience will be considered.
Experience managing a team.
Minimum of 10 years of experience working with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP covered processes.
Minimum of 5 years of experience conducting Process Hazard Analysis (PHA).
Experience with incident investigations and the ability to facilitate Root Cause Analyses.
Detail-oriented with an ability and desire to persevere.
Maintains a positive attitude and is willing to quickly adapt to changing situations.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft O365 products including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SharePoint.
Proficient use of PHA Works software.
Experience with Six Sigma techniques.

Responsibilities

Maintain alignment with corporate process safety goals.
Assist support personnel and field personnel with the interpretation of and compliance with process safety requirements.
Drive resolution of highest risk issues with a strong sense of urgency and integrity.
Champion and promote a strong process safety culture.
Prepare and organize written presentations, documentation, and reports pertaining to process safety activities.
Deliver key presentations to senior management.
Track and report process safety leading and lagging indicators, key process safety metrics, action plans, and priority recommendations.
Assist with identifying resources to support key activities.
Identify process safety improvement opportunities through interaction with all process safety stakeholders.
Make recommendations and justify new tools and work process improvements.
Ensure that process safety-related Standard Maintenance Procedures (SMPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), engineering standards and guidelines are developed, reviewed, and updated as needed.
Ensure that process safety deliverables are an integral part of project execution and management of change.
Provide leadership to ensure that the quality and timing of project deliverables is acceptable.
Ensure that appropriate management systems and information management tools are used to effectively manage process safety information.
Ensure that adequate Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment procedures are in place and followed (includes PHA, LOPA, Facility Siting, Human Factors).
Ensure that trained and qualified PHA facilitators and qualified team members participate in PHAs.
Lead all key process safety incident investigations and Root Cause Analyses (RCA).
Promote a culture of transparency and seek to understand underlying management system gaps and lack of operational discipline.
Share key learnings and follow up on incident investigations.
Participate in key Pre-Startup Safety and Operational Readiness Reviews (PSSRs).
Ensure that adequate Management of Change (MOC) procedures are in place and followed.
Manage the LG&E PSM/RMP Assessment program and lead or participate in key process safety assessments.
Ensure that process safety training is developed and maintained.
Deliver process safety training when appropriate.
Analyze and understand process safety incidents within industry to identify opportunities for improvement within.
Drive accountability at all organizational levels for process safety performance and risk reduction.
Stay up to date with local, state, and federal regulations that apply to facilities within.
