About The Position

The Associate Director of Student Transition will direct all transition efforts in the Office of Student Orientation and Transition. The Associate Director will oversee the transition efforts for first year students, transfer students, Terp families and supporters, and other populations as needed. The Associate Director will also manage and design the curriculum for all transition courses including UNIV100, UNIV362 and leadership development courses for our Teaching Assistant program including EDCP498T and EDUC388U.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Eight (8) years of experience in higher education.
  • Three (3) years of experience supervising or managing professional staff.
  • Knowledge of student transition and retention protocols and issues.
  • Knowledge of project management and program development.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.

  • Solid experience and skillset in orientation, transition, & retention work, project management, and curriculum and program development.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the curriculum and implementation of over 140 sections of UNIV100/101, the university’s first year seminar
  • Oversee the course scheduling process for UNIV100/101 and collaborate with the academic college coordinators to make adjustments to the schedule of classes
  • Design and implement training and development opportunities for new and returning UNIV100/101 instructors
  • Review and revise the flexible syllabus along with other instruction materials used by instructors for UNIV100/101
  • Facilitate suite of workshops including Myers-Briggs Type indicator and CliftonStrengths for UNIV100/101 sections
  • Design and develop the curriculum for UNIV362: Designing Your Life After College
  • Coordinate the large lecture instruction for UNIV362 and oversee the logistics for scheduling presenters
  • Develop and implement an assessment strategy for transition courses including UNIV100/101 and UNIV362
  • Create, implement and facilitate programs that address the transitional needs of transfer and sophomore students at the University of Maryland.
  • Establish and implement a communication plan that seeks to connect new students to campus resources in the first six weeks of the semester
  • Design and implement the curriculum for EDCP498T and EDUC388U, the training and leadership development courses for the UNIV100 Teaching Assistants
  • Coordinate and implement the Terp Family Orientation program to welcome and transition over 6,000 parents, family members and supporters into the campus community
  • Develop and execute opportunities for parents and family members to connect with each other and the campus community through the Terp Trip program
  • Coordinate with campus partners to facilitate presentations for Terp family members and supporters
  • Collaborate with the Office of Family Engagement to administer Terp Family Receptions where parents and family members have the opportunity to connect with current Terp family members while on campus at Terp Family Orientation.
  • Provide general support to the New Student Orientation program
  • Evaluate the Terp Family Orientation program by developing and administering a post program assessment
  • Supervise the Coordinator of Student Transition
  • Direct the recruitment, hiring, and training of 25-30 UNIV100 undergraduate Teaching Assistants
  • Teach EDCP498T in the spring and EDUC388U in the fall to train UNIV100 Teaching Assistants
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise 5 UNIV100 TA Ambassadors, who are experienced TAs who will mentor the new cohort of UNIV100 Teaching Assistants
  • Recruit, hire, train and supervise the Student Coordinator of Transition/Teaching Assistant Coordinator
  • Assist the Associate Director and Coordinator of Orientation in the recruitment, hiring, and training of the Orientation Student Staff including, Student Coordinators, Orientation Advisors, and Orientation Office Assistants
  • Develop and implement new programming consistent with the scope, goals and vision of the Office of Student Orientation and Transition
  • Develops and maintains key partnerships with campus stakeholders
  • Serve on the Enrollment Management Working Group to keep campus stakeholders informed about New Student Orientation registration numbers and trends
  • Serve on the Fall Welcome Committee and coordinate aspects of Fall Welcome as assigned
  • Represents the University of Maryland’s student transition efforts on a National level by presenting and attending conferences
  • Participates in developing data-driven decisions and long term strategic planning for the Office of New Student Orientation and Transition.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Orientation and Transition
