About The Position

The Associate Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance plays a vital role in ensuring the University’s compliance with U.S. export control laws and trade regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), Export Administration Regulations (EAR), and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) regulations. This position reports to the Executive Director, Global Export and Trade Compliance and supports the development, implementation, and day-to-day management of NYU’s Global Export and Trade Compliance Program, a core element of the University’s Global Ethics and Compliance Program. The Associate Director works under the direction of the GETC Executive Director, they are expected to operate independently, manage a significant portfolio of responsibilities, and engage with stakeholders across NYU’s campuses—including NY, Abu Dhabi, and Shanghai. The role is suited to a highly skilled compliance professional with demonstrated subject-matter knowledge, strong problem-solving abilities, and the ability to advise stakeholders across disciplines.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in international affairs, engineering, law, business, data science, or a closely related field.
• 5+ years of recent, relevant experience in higher education, government, law, or international compliance.
• Substantive knowledge of U.S. export control laws (which may include, combined relevant experience in different industries, sectors, and jurisdictions) and federal research security requirements.
• Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage complex projects.
• Ability to carry out tasks independently.
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills with strong commitment to customer service.
• Strong writing, presentation, and analytical skills.
• Meticulous attention to detail and ability to manage sensitive/confidential data.
• Ability to independently prioritize complex projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Familiarity with using export and sanctions compliance software platforms such as Visual Compliance, and Export on Demand (Amber Road).

Nice To Haves

• Master's Degree or other advanced degree: JD, MBA, MS in science/engineering fields.
• 7+ years Experience managing restricted party screening systems and processes, reviewing and assessing the results of screening.
• Performing complex export control and secure research reviews.
• Performing compliance audits, monitoring, risk assessments, and investigations.
• Familiarity with federal export control and research security regulatory requirements and experience monitoring regulatory activity in higher education / academic research institutions/ global organizational setting.
• Knowledge of U.S. trade compliance-related laws (ITAR, EAR, OFAC) and experience with their practical application to research administration.
• Knowledge of electronic systems used in facilitating trade compliance (Export On-Demand, Visual Compliance, SNAP-R, AES etc.).
