About The Position

The Associate Director of Finance oversees the organization’s accounting operations, ensures strong internal controls, and supports strategic financial planning. This role manages the accounting team, leads financial reporting, ensures grant and regulatory compliance, and partners with senior leadership to support the organization’s financial health. This is a hands-on role that requires strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, attention to detail, and good judgment, as well as a commitment to delivering high-quality customer service and partnering effectively with organizational leaders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least 5 years of accounting experience with increasing responsibility, preferably in a nonprofit organization, including experience applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), supporting grant-funded work, supervising and developing accounting staff, and managing key financial functions such as budgeting, reporting, audit, and internal controls.
  • Builds positive working relationships and works well as part of a team. Uses plain language to communicate ideas and information in writing, in conversations, and in presentations so people at all levels can understand.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, with strong analytical skills to review and understand financial data and translate goals into clear, workable processes.
  • Hands-on knowledge of standard accounting rules (GAAP) and federal grant requirements under Uniform Guidance (2 CFR Part 200), including administrative, cost, and audit requirements for nonprofit organizations, as well as California wage and hour laws.
  • A leader who works well as part of a team, acts with honesty, and wants to support a mission-driven organization while providing helpful and responsive service.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including building and analyzing financial models and reports, and experience using financial and payroll systems to manage data and support daily operations.
  • Experience collaborating with individuals with disabilities and those from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds, or a proven dedication to understanding and supporting these communities.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business or other related fields.
  • CPA certification
  • Seven years of verifiable experience in a substantially similar position.
  • Non-profit fund / grant accounting experience.
  • Experience with Abila MIP Fund Accounting Software.
  • Experience with Paylocity payroll and Human Resources Information Systems.
  • Established relationships within disability communities and / or with multi-ethnic communities.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting functions, including policies, systems, and processes.
  • Ensure accurate financial reporting, payroll, accounts payable, cash management, internal controls, financial analysis, and planning.
  • Support grant accounting and compliance for federal, state, and other funders.
  • Review and approve key accounting transactions to ensure payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, the general ledger, and reconciliations are correct and completed on time.
  • Ensure that the accounting staff maintains financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and monitors the use of all funds.
  • Timely and accurate review and processing of federal cash draws per granting agency requirements, and coordinating daily cash management functions to ensure adequate cash flow necessary for operations.
  • Prepare timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual internal/external financial and other reports, and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Work with the Director of Finance and Administration to prepare the agency budget and fiscal projections. Supervise budget analysis prepared by accounting staff.
  • Lead annual audits and work with external auditors to prepare required documentation. Also support audits and financial reviews by funding and regulatory agencies.
  • Work with the Director of Finance and Administration to oversee and manage financial systems, improve processes for efficiency and effectiveness, and ensure they meet current and future organizational needs.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures to support current operations, prepare for future needs, and ensure compliance with grant, contract, and regulatory requirements.
  • Staff support for the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors and other Board committees as assigned.
  • Willing to support or cover team responsibilities as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Lead the accounting team by hiring, supervising, coaching, and evaluating staff.
  • Provide mentoring and training to support staff growth and high-quality performance.
  • Promote and model a collaborative, service-oriented finance department that works effectively across the organization.
