We are seeking an experienced Communications Engineer to join our team in Sacramento, California, offering flexibility and hybrid working. This role involves providing technical expertise within an integrated project team for the specification, costing, compliance, construction, acceptance, maintenance, and operation of communications systems and equipment. Essential skills include practical experience and knowledge of all railway communications systems and emerging rail technology, such as next-generation radio systems. The ideal candidate will also be a strong communicator, team player, and adept at building stakeholder rapport.

Requirements

  • Educated to degree level with a relevant degree or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant professional qualifications, such as Incorporated Engineer working towards Chartered status.
  • Strong background in communications systems, including railway fiber and radio systems.
  • Strong railway system background with knowledge and understanding of interfaces between different elements of a high-speed railway.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Ability to plan and deliver appropriate systems to understand future demand, emerging technologies, and areas for improvement.
  • Experience managing third parties to meet service levels.
  • Engineering management experience involving technical and business risk assessment.
  • Ability to work across a multidisciplinary team and establish relationships at all levels.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, industry, and company standards.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without employer-sponsored work authorization now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of an integrated project team to deliver a high-speed rail system that meets client business requirements.
  • Interpret business requirements and develop performance requirements for rail systems specifications, ensuring compliance with statutes, system design, national and international standards, and best industry practices.
  • Provide advice and guidance on rail systems industry developments to maintain specifications at the forefront of safety, technology, and performance.
  • Offer specialist technical guidance and support for system integration and interfaces between rail systems and other works.
  • Provide technical support to project team members to ensure specialist advice is readily available.
  • Establish technical content for communication system requirements and standards for the project.
  • Update Design Criteria related to communications systems for future contracts.
  • Review the overall safety, performance, and compatibility of project designs, providing structured feedback.
  • Participate in or lead audits against requirements, processes, contracts, or laws.
  • Contribute to the development of project requests for proposals (RFPs) and evaluate contractor/subcontractor proposals.
  • Monitor contractual commitments to ensure work is performed according to specifications, drawings, and contract terms.
