About The Position

This entry-level role combines foundational elements of both a Database Administrator (DBA) and a Database Developer (DB Dev) to support the company’s laboratory and business systems. Under the guidance of senior technical staff, this role participates in the configuring, testing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and tuning of database systems, as well as writing custom queries and developing in-house applications. The ideal candidate will use this role to grow their skills, with the ultimate expectation of becoming fully independent in both database administration and development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Computer Science, Management Information System, Software Engineering or related fields. Associates degree with relevant internship or equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Experience supporting enterprise relational database systems such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Database is preferred.
  • 1-2 years of professional experience in database administration, database development, software development or related role.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to gather and assist in analyzing and translating end user requirements into database designs and technical solutions.
  • Strong knowledge in relational database architecture and database design principles.
  • Experience with database backup, disaster recovery strategies including transaction logs and point-in-time recovery.
  • Academic exposure or foundational knowledge in Microsoft SQL Server T-SQL and Oracle SQL and PL/SQL.
  • Academic exposure to or experience in Microsoft Access Jet SQL and VBA/VB.
  • Familiarity with database administration tools such as Toad, SSMS, SSIS or similar platforms.
  • Familiarity of database connectivity technologies including ODBC, OLEDB and related platforms.
  • Willingness to learn FDA regulatory requirements such as 21 CFR Part 11, GLP, and GCP (on-the-job training will be provided).
  • Ability to follow instructions, manage individual daily tasks, and a strong desire to learn and grow under technical mentorship.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in planning, installing, configuring, maintaining, upgrading and migrating database server infrastructure.
  • Assists with database performance monitoring and tuning to optimize application performance.
  • Patches database backend periodically following established procedures.
  • Participates in tests and implements database backup, restoration, and disaster recovery plans.
  • Works with senior team members and internal end users to understand user requirements and to develop custom applications, reports and queries for data export/import.
  • Participates in designing, testing and deploying databases to ensure database normalization, performance optimization and regulatory compliance, under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Codes and tests the application and custom queries.
  • Assists in releasing applications and queries for production per Alturas software lifecycle management processes.
  • Helps maintain database security, access controls, and data integrity.
  • Collaborates with validation personnel for application testing and validation activities.
  • Participates in troubleshooting technical issues alongside senior team members and application, database, or software vendors.
  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned.
