About The Position

We’re seeking a conceptually sharp Freelance Associate Creative Director to lead the vision and production for organic social content for our client, Magic: The Gathering. This role is built for a hands-on, visual creative leader who has genuine passion and experience with Magic, thrives in internet culture, has deep experience in video and static production, and excels in creating social-first content that sparks meaningful engagement. This role requires a freelance associate creative director with a Design or Art Direction background, strong production experience and executional skills, genuine connection to Magic (through personal or professional experience) and an intense curiosity and passion for making organic social content that truly explodes on the algorithm. You’ll collaborate closely with copywriters, strategists and content creators to bring bold, social-first ideas to life, from high-performing social campaign content to one-off reactive content. This position is open to Los Angeles candidates. Local candidates only, no relocation provided. You will be required to be on-site at our Venice office location each week. This is a part-time freelance position at 8+ hours per week. There may be additional hours needed on occasion, particularly during production windows. Requirements

Connection to Magic REQUIRED: We need true spellslingers, no cardboard tourists. Whether you love to play, have worked with Wizards of the Coast in a past life, or are such a fan that you can hang with every word The Professor throws at you, we’ll need you to prove that you know your way around a playmat.
Brand-Driven Social Content Portfolio REQUIRED: A strong portfolio, reel and/or social feed featuring brand content for social media. Submissions without examples of brand-focused social content will not be considered.
5+ years of total experience in professional content creation/editorial, digital/social video, or creative production roles.
Experience producing for social channels and tailoring work to various formats and audience expectations. Demonstrate understanding of meme culture, visual humor, reactive content, creator trends, and the broader social culture ecosystem.
Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with creatives, strategists, and producers.
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to iterate quickly on feedback.
A passion for experimenting with content styles, hooks, formats, and storytelling approaches native to the internet.

Responsibilities

Lead the vision and execution on a steady cadence of content ranging from low-lift, always-on content to live event BTS to higher production value campaign content.
Lead the vision and help create scroll-stopping social-first content that’s on-brand for Magic and platform-native using the latest generative tools across TikTok, Instagram, Twitter/X, and more.
Translate creative strategy into breakthrough visuals and assets—video, static, animation, memes, design, illustration, carousels, remix formats, and more.
Ability to direct the editorial short-form content with story, vibe, rhythm, and comedic timing, blending AI-generated assets with traditional footage.
Understand platform algorithms, communities, and formats. Know what makes great hooks, and enforce strong hooks in every content piece.
Stay current on social platform evolutions, creator content, and digital visual styles to ensure everything feels relevant and cutting edge.
Work with the creative team to concept and execute content ideas that are bold, original, and tuned to our client’s culture and voice.
Take ownership of assigned projects from kickoff through execution, while collaborating across departments and teams. During the development process, lead the creation of creative decks and ensure the content is clear, well-crafted, supports the strategy and is on-time for each client meeting.
