About The Position

GEICO is looking to hire an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in California courts and other first party insurance defense. The position is with GEICO Staff Counsel located in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco. The role involves researching laws, preparing legal documents, rendering opinions on liability and damages, and managing assigned cases through all stages of litigation, including trials and hearings. The Associate Counsel will be responsible for documenting files clearly and professionally, following complex instructions, resolving conflicts, and demonstrating strong organizational and multitasking skills. The position is remote, with an annual salary range of $112,750.00 - $186,550.00.

Requirements

  • 2-6+ years of experience in related field
  • Litigation experience on insurance/defense/and or personal injury REQUIRED
  • Juris Doctor degree REQUIRED
  • Admission to the California Bar REQUIRED
  • Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in California and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
  • Must be able to travel as required, including but not limited, to attend trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences

Responsibilities

  • Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
  • Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
  • Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery
  • Conducting depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
  • Defending by trial or dispositive hearing, all matters assigned, as applicable
  • Documenting files in a clear, concise, professional written manner
  • Following complex instructions, resolving conflicts or facilitating conflict resolution
  • Demonstrating strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
  • Learning and applying large amounts of technical and procedural information
  • Communicating in a professional manner in person, via telephone and written correspondence/email
