About The Position

GEICO is looking to hire an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in New York courts and other first party insurance defense. The position is with GEICO Staff Counsel covering venues within Queens, NY. The role involves researching laws, preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda, and rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department. The Associate Counsel will also prepare and handle pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath, and defend assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearing.

Requirements

• 2 to 6+ years of experience in related field in litigation experience in insurance defense and/or personal injury
• Juris Doctor degree REQUIRED
• Admission to the New York Bar REQUIRED
• Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in New York and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable
• Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone and written correspondence/email

Responsibilities

• Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
• Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
• Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, to include depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
• Defending by trial or dispositive hearing, all matters assigned, as applicable
• Documenting files in a clear, concise, professional written manner
• Traveling as required, including but not limited to, attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences
• Following complex instructions, resolving conflicts or facilitating conflict resolution
• Utilizing strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
• Learning and applying large amounts of technical and procedural information
