If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be hybrid. This means you will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week. You will work from your home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion of the work week. Details of this schedule will be discussed with your leadership. If you live more than 50 miles from the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be remote. This means you will be expected to work from your home, within the continental US. If the role is remote, there may be occasions that you are requested to come to the office based on business need. Any requests to come to the office would be communicated with you in advance.

Requirements

  • Strong legal research skills
  • Excellent legal and business judgment
  • Transactional legal experience, including reviewing, negotiating, and finalizing corporate and commercial agreements
  • Experience reviewing, negotiating, and finalizing corporate legal agreements (e.g. MSA's, SaaS agreements, DPAs, BAAs)
  • Experience supporting corporate transactions and strategic business initiatives
  • Ability to assess legal risk and provide practical, business-oriented legal advice
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact with legal colleagues, management, and Aflac staff
  • Ability to manage multiple matters in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating commercial or corporate transactional agreements (e.g. vendor, technology, services, or strategic partnership agreements)
  • Juris doctor from an ABA-accredited school of law
  • 3 to 7 years of law practice experience in a combination of law firm and corporate settings or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the insurance or financial services industry are a plus
  • Familiarity with privacy, data protection, or technology-related transactions are a plus

Responsibilities

  • Primarily leverages knowledge of legal specialty in providing counsel while building knowledge of the business context in which he/she operates; provides advice in a collaborative manner that is consistent with the Corporation’s values and applicable laws and regulations, and provides for a practical balancing of legal risks with business objectives, with a primary focus on supporting corporate and commercial transactions.
  • Provides and effectively communicates advice on legal issues to all levels of management and staff of the Corporation and affiliates; reviews, drafts, negotiates, and interprets commercial and corporate agreements in support of business initiatives; identifies potential legal issues and evaluates the degree of legal risk related to business practices, transactions, and policies; advises client/management, including counseling senior management on legal considerations impacting business operations; coordinates with cross‑functional partners and manages outside counsel as needed for transactional matters; reviews and interprets contracts, legislative, and judicial developments.
  • May receive specific direction from management or more senior law professionals as to the outcomes, process and schedules expected.
