About The Position

The Associate Engineer is a mid-level position within the engineering department, operating under direction and minimal supervision. This role primarily functions as a lead technical reviewer for engineering plans submitted by developers and consulting engineers for city staff approval. It requires independent judgment in evaluating moderate to complex private land development and public infrastructure projects, ensuring strict compliance with engineering design and public agency standards. The Associate Engineer is expected to independently review plans and coordinate effectively with various city departments and external stakeholders. The position demands demonstrated technical proficiency and the ability to efficiently manage multiple plan review projects.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of progressive engineering experience in Land Development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Well versed in the principles and practices of engineering and applicable laws and codes related to Land Development projects with a high level of independent judgement.
  • Proficiency with electronic plan review systems and information sharing or communication platforms such as Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft OneDrive & Teams.
  • Familiarity with public agency municipal codes and design standards.
  • Familiarity with the land development process, from entitlement to issuance of building permits
  • Familiarity with environmental permitting requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Current California Engineer-In-Training or Professional Engineer License is highly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Under minimal supervision, perform in-depth technical reviews of civil engineering plans, including grading and drainage, stormwater management, roadway design, and public utility systems.
  • Under minimal supervision, review technical reports, such as hydrology and hydraulic analyses, sewer studies, and stormwater quality management plans for compliance with agency standards and governing regulations.
  • Prepare plan “redlines” using Bluebeam Revu and written engineering review comments.
  • Coordinate directly with developers, consultants, and city staff when necessary.
  • Keeps informed of updates to standards, regulations, and best practices.
  • Work closely with jurisdiction staff, developers, and design consultants.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
