About The Position

The Associate Attorney will serve as a key member of the Legal Department, providing legal advice and support across Peoples Bank and its affiliates and subsidiaries. This role will work closely with the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and Paralegal, and will serve as a legal partner (as a secondary contact) to business units across the organization.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (Ohio, Kentucky, or West Virginia preferred or willingness to obtain)
  • Strong legal research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate legal concepts into practical business advice
  • Ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships with internal clients and external partners
  • Sound judgment and ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) required
  • Active law license or willingness to obtain required (Ohio, Kentucky, or West Virginia preferred or ability to obtain)

Nice To Haves

  • Legal and/or banking experience preferred but not required (law firm or in-house experience preferred)
  • Knowledge of banking laws and regulations preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Vendor Contract Review: Legal review and negotiation of vendor contracts, including issue spotting and providing proactive advice and counsel to internal business partners.
  • General Legal: Serve as a legal contact for business units, including Retail and other operational areas, providing timely and practical legal advice on day-to-day matters. Assist the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel in responding to legal questions and issues arising from business operations. Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, guidance, and communications for internal stakeholders. Draft, review, and revise legal documents, including contracts, policies, procedures, and internal guidance documents.
  • Litigation: Support management of litigation and regulatory matters, including coordination with internal stakeholders and outside counsel.
  • Regulatory Complaints: Ownership from start to finish of responses to consumer complaints received through the banking regulators, working closely with internal partners.
  • Subpoenas: Provide legal oversight of subpoena, discovery, and records request responses, working closely with the Paralegal.
  • Outside Counsel: Management of outside counsel on matters assigned, including engagement, scope of work, and performance oversight. Review outside counsel work product and ensure alignment with legal strategy and organizational objectives on matters assigned.
  • State Filings and Registrations: Oversee third-party vendor responsible for maintaining state business registrations, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
  • Corporate Real Estate and Leases: Manage administration of the company’s real estate lease portfolio using lease management software.
  • Department/Administrative: Collaborate with and serve as backup to the Paralegal on matter management processes, legal holds, subpoenas and departmental workflows. Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders across the organization. Participate in cross-functional projects and initiatives requiring legal support. Promote a high level of responsiveness and “client service” within the Legal Department. Will perform special projects as assigned.
