About The Position

The Department of Health Policy & Management at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Public Health is seeking a practice-focused faculty member for a non-tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This role requires demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching and leadership in academic programs. Candidates with practice experience and educational backgrounds in health administration, health services management, business administration, organizational studies, or related fields are encouraged to apply. Health care industry experience in a payer, provider, not-for-profit, government, or consulting setting is strongly preferred. The teaching emphasis will be on management-related areas such as Introduction to the US Health Care System, Health Care Management, Strategic Management, Operations Management, Health Care Finance, Quality, Human Resources Management, Leadership, Case Analysis, or Applied Problem-Solving. The successful candidate will be closely involved with teaching and mentoring in the Department’s graduate programs, including its Master of Health Administration (MHA), Master of Public Health (MPH), and MHA/MBA programs, and may also involve undergraduate students in the School of Public Health’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) program. Responsibilities include students’ integrative experiences, professional development activities, curriculum development, accreditation, job placement, and alumni relations. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment requiring teaching four 3-credit courses annually. Requirements

  • A combination of professional experience in the field of health care management in a payer, provider, not-for-profit, government, or consulting setting and academic experience as a course instructor.
  • A track record or commitment to excellence in teaching at the graduate and/or undergraduate levels.
  • A track record or potential for excellence in mentoring graduate or undergraduate students.
  • A commitment to excellence in service.
  • Experience or potential for excellence in managing and innovating in professional degree programs.
  • For Assistant Professor (Industry candidates with a professional degree in management (e.g., MHA or MBA)): a minimum of 2 years of academic experience including full responsibility for at least one course.
  • For Assistant Professor (Academic candidates with a doctoral degree): prior teaching experience as well as prior professional health care management or health industry experience.
  • All Assistant Professor candidates: demonstrated ability to teach, evaluate, and mentor students or the potential to do so.
  • For Associate Professor (with a doctoral degree): at least 6 years of post-graduate experience in a combination of teaching and service in a health management program at the undergraduate or graduate level, as well as professional health care management experience in a payer, provider, not-for-profit, government, or consulting setting.
  • For Associate Professor (with a professional degree in management (e.g., MHA or MBA)): at least 6 years of post-graduate experience in relevant positions of increasing complexity in a combination of industry and educational settings, as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring.

  • Track record of participation in production of research, educational materials, or industry reports is preferred (for Associate Professor level).

  • Service to relevant national and local professional organizations (e.g. ACHE, HFMA, MGMA, etc.) (for Associate Professor level).
