About The Position

The City Attorney’s Office is seeking an Associate Assistant City Attorney to join the Child Protection and Youth Services Unit within the Human Services Legal Services Section. In this important role, you will support Denver Human Services in Dependency & Neglect and Juvenile Delinquency matters, representing social workers and administrators in state trial and appellate courts. In addition to appearing in court, the attorney attends collaborative, multi-disciplinary meetings to guide decisions for the treatment and placement of families, children, and youth. Our attorneys regularly appear in all state courts, including Denver Juvenile Court.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree or Bachelor of Law Degree
  • Two (2) years of experience as an attorney at law
  • Possession of a license to practice law in Colorado from the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire or a reasonable expectation of becoming licensed by the Colorado Supreme Court by the date of hire in accordance with C.R.C.P. 203.2, 203.3, 203.4 and 205.6.
  • Valid work authorization that does not require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the U.S.

  • An undergraduate degree or minor in Social Work, Juvenile Justice, Sociology and Political Science
  • A background working with neighborhood or restorative justice programs
  • Experience with programs connected to the Dept. of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP)
  • A strong commitment to public service
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal consultation and representation for Denver Human Services throughout all stages of Dependency & Neglect litigation
  • Prepare social workers for Juvenile Delinquency hearings and handle motions, discovery, and court representation
  • Participate in collaborative, multidisciplinary meetings related to youth and family services
  • Draft motions, memoranda, briefs, and pleadings
  • Negotiate and prepare settlement agreements
  • Conduct legal research and assist colleagues on specialized matters
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
