About The Position

Chronicle Heritage is seeking Associate Archaeologists to serve as Field Directors on projects throughout Nevada, Utah, and Idaho. Under the supervision of the Office Principal/Team Lead, Principal Investigator, and Project Managers, the Field Director will be responsible for overseeing and leading archaeological crews in all fieldwork, providing training to new staff, completing office work including technical writing, directing data collection, analysis, and interpretation, formulating recommendations and solutions to complex problems, working with other staff to implement project-specific instructions, and upholding fieldwork procedures and health and safety requirements. The role requires willingness to travel and stay overnight on short- and long-term projects.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience directing fieldwork for CRM projects
  • 2+ years of experience with analysis and technical report writing
  • Expertise in archaeological field methods and data collection
  • Able to be permitted as a Field Director/Crew Chief on Bureau of Land Management Cultural Resource Use Permits and Permits for Archaeological Investigations for Nevada, Utah, Idaho (ARPA Permits).
  • Capable of walking/hiking several miles daily, over all types of terrain carrying all necessary supplies and equipment, and able to excavate in a variety of conditions (heat, wind, cold, rain/snow).
  • Proficient organizational, scheduling, and budget management skills
  • Highly adaptable to dynamic project needs, ability to forecast and strategize efficient approach for survey in various terrain, ability and willingness to mentor other field staff, possess positive attitude, and overall team oriented
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
  • Proficient with using iPad and GIS based applications for site documentation and recording
  • Reliable transportation and driving record that meets Chronicle Heritage standards for driving company and/or rented vehicles.
  • Ability to camp and own necessary camping gear for remote dispersed camping in various terrain and all weather conditions

Nice To Haves

  • Currently permitted Field Director/Crew Chief on Bureau of Land Management Cultural Resource Use Permit in Nevada. If able, please provide permit number and BLM experience table with application.
  • Advanced degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
  • Meet or exceed the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology
  • Listed on (or ability to be listed on) the Register of Professional Archaeologists
  • Qualified to be permitted as a Field Director
  • Demonstrable experience supervising field crews during archaeological studies
  • Experience writing cultural resource technical reports and letters
  • Prior experience with Trimble GPS and/or ArcGIS Collector/Survey123/Field Maps apps
  • Familiarity with GPS and GIS data collection in the field, including ArcCollector, Field Maps and/or Codifi
  • Familiarity with Section 106 processes and NRHP eligibility criteria for sites
  • Ability to endure adverse environmental conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, precipitation, and challenging terrain for sustained durations
  • Excellent attention to detail, a positive work ethic, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment
  • Strong organizational skills with task and time management
  • Excellent leadership skills in the field

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead archaeological crews in all manner of fieldwork, including pedestrian surveys, testing/data recovery projects, and construction monitoring
  • Provide training to new staff, including field and laboratory staff
  • Complete office work, including technical writing related to pre- and post-field activities
  • Direct collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; formulate recommendations and solutions to highly complex problems or those involving risk
  • Work with Chronicle Heritage Office Principals/Team Leads, Principal Investigators, Project Managers, and other staff to implement project-specific instructions and methods
  • Observe and uphold Chronicle Heritage's Fieldwork Procedures and Health and Safety requirements
  • Be willing to travel and stay overnight on short- and long-term projects
