The Associate Scientist, GAB supports the University’s research goals and objectives by performing laboratory experiments in his/her areas of interest, expertise or assignment. Moreover, the incumbent performs various analytical procedures involving method development and application development and synthesis. The Associate Scientist provides consulting services for the installation, configuration, and testing of AI/ML tools and packages within a scientific research environment and assists users in advancing their research and training needs in data science and computing. Collaborates with other researchers and helps develop strategies to improve user training, outreach and engagement. This includes teaching and developing courses, external funding opportunities, conferences, and publications. The Associate Scientist evaluates new high-performance computing (HPC) architectures, systems, and software tools to determine best techniques for achieving performance, and provides application consulting and technical support to faculty, students and research staff using HPC environments. Serves as a research facilitator and works with potential users to engage with IDSC Advanced Computing Services (ACS) services. Collaborates in the design and delivery of HPC and data science courses with a goal to expedite research computing. Reviews user-facing documentation for accuracy and completeness and makes recommendations for improvement in organization or content. Design, develop, and teach courses (including short courses for users) to promote computational sciences across the UM enterprise. Develops and submits grant proposals in areas that help with expediting ACS capabilities in support of the UM enterprise. Collaborates with UM faculty and other non-UM collaborators in improving ACS services in terms of both compute and data-driven workflows. Assists the Director with accounting and policies for charge-back through periodic ACS service utilization statements for identifying and cultivating new business development opportunities. Designs, revises, and updates policies on allocation management strategies for accelerating research and innovation through advanced computing. Represents ACS and IDSC in domestic and international conferences, symposia, and other professional meetings.
