About The Position

The Associate Director, Ambulatory EMR Implementation & Operational Support is a senior leadership role responsible for the enterprise-wide execution, delivery, and operational oversight of the Epic Ambulatory EMR across all ambulatory practices of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM). Reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer, this role serves as the primary operational owner and executive liaison for ambulatory EMR services, ensuring consistent, high-quality delivery of implementations, optimizations, and ongoing support. The Associate Director provides independent leadership, oversees a team of 3–4 direct reports, and influences outcomes across clinical, operational, and technical domains. This position is weighted toward large-scale execution and sustained service delivery, translating strategy into measurable results while aligning ambulatory EMR capabilities with institutional priorities related to clinical quality, provider experience, operational efficiency, compliance, and growth.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required (Information Technology, Healthcare, Business, or related field)
  • Extensive, progressive experience with Epic Ambulatory EMR implementation and operational support in a complex healthcare environment
  • Demonstrated success leading large-scale, multi-practice EMR initiatives
  • Proven experience partnering with executive leadership and physician leadership
  • Deep understanding of ambulatory clinical workflows, practice operations, and regulatory requirements

Responsibilities

  • Provides enterprise-wide leadership and accountability for the execution, delivery, and operational performance of Epic Ambulatory EMR services across all UMSOM ambulatory practices.
  • Serves as the principal ambulatory EMR liaison to executive leadership, including the CIO, senior clinical leaders, and operational leadership, representing scope, progress, risks, and outcomes of ambulatory EMR initiatives.
  • Leads the planning, coordination, and execution of large-scale ambulatory EMR implementations, upgrades, optimizations, and enterprise initiatives, ensuring on-time and high-quality delivery.
  • Oversees and manages a team of 3–4 direct reports, providing direction, performance management, mentoring, and professional development.
  • Establishes and enforces enterprise standards, governance, and best practices for ambulatory EMR build, workflows, support models, and operational processes.
  • Ensures ambulatory EMR solutions effectively support clinical workflows, revenue cycle integrity, regulatory and billing requirements, and organizational risk mitigation.
  • Partners closely with physician leaders, practice leadership, and operational stakeholders to ensure ambulatory EMR capabilities align with real-world practice needs and institutional priorities.
